Defense Secretary Mattis condemns North Korea following Otto Warmbier's death

Trump's stern language was echoed by South Korean President Moon Jae-In, who said in an interview ahead of a White House visit next week that North Korea bears responsibility for the student's death.

Warmbier's death came just days after he was released by the North Korean government and returned to the United States suffering from what USA doctors described as extensive brain damage. I am encouraged that we're calling for, pressing for the release of the three remaining Americans in North Korean custody.

North Korea released Otto Warmbier, a student detained for over a year, June 12.

President Donald Trump issued a statement on Monday about Warmbier's death that said in part, "Otto's fate deepens my Administration's determination to prevent such tragedies from befalling innocent people at the hands of regimes that do not respect the rule of law or basic human decency".

The University of Virginia student was held prisoner in North Korea while travelling.

Why? To make a political point, to show the USA that this is what you get if you mess with North Korea. After a one hour trial in March 2016, he was convicted and sentenced to 15 years of hard labor.

North Korea is also holding Canadian pastor Hyeon Soo Lim.

The family of a U.S. student who died shortly after being freed from North Korea have declined a post-mortem examination, according to a United States coroner.

The world found out Warmbier was in a coma when he was released June 13 after almost 17 months of detention.

The Trump administration is still considering how to respond to the death of 22-year-old Otto Warmbier. His family says it was told he had been in a coma since soon after his sentencing.

Warmbier's parents haven't cited a cause of death, but "awful, torturous mistreatment" by North Korea. His doctors at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center described him as being in a state of "unresponsive wakefulness." . It was when he was leaving the country on January 2, 2016 that he was detained by law enforcement.

North Korea has conducted five nuclear tests over the past decade.

Fred Warmbier told reporters the North Korean regime deemed his son a "war criminal" and "brutalized and terrorized" him during his detainment.

This story has been corrected to show that the coroner's last name is Sammarco, not Sammaraco.
