London Van Attack: Brave Imam 'Stopped All Forms' of Assault on Suspect”

Police said Muslims were clearly the target and Prime Minister Theresa May described it as a "sickening" terrorist attack.

Martin went to a school in North London to speak to some kids who live nearby, and they told him how important the community is to them.

The historic moment when Britain formally notified the European Union in March of its intention to leave came days after a terrorist attack on the home of British democracy.

"The appalling attack stands against the shared values of the Philippines and the United Kingdom as peace-loving and tolerant societies that respect all religions", the DFA said in a statement.

Mayor Sadiq Khan, London's first Muslim mayor, urged residents to focus on their shared values and to stand together during an unprecedented period in the capital's history.

"They were calm and collected and managed to calm people down and to extinguish any flames of anger or mob rule that would have taken charge had this group of mature brothers not stepped in".

Police officers attend to the scene after a vehicle collided with pedestrians in the Finsbury Park neighborhood of North London, Britain June 19, 2017.

Detectives have been given extra time to question the 47-year-old, who has been arrested oh suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of terrorism including murder and attempted murder.

Security Minister Ben Wallace said the man was not known to the security services and police said they believed he was acting alone.

Witnesses said they heard the van driver, who was detained by members of the public at the scene, shout: "I'm going to kill Muslims".

Organisers, who arranged the event under the banner of "No To Islamophobia - Unity with Finsbury Park Mosque", say the attack occurred in a climate of attempts to demonise Muslims by sections of the press, commentators and some politicians.

A local imam, Mohammed Mahmoud, guarded the suspect from harm until police took him into custody.

The family of the accused gathered outside a house in the town and his sister who was also present at the spot said, "I am very sorry for what's happened".

The attack on Monday hits a community already feeling targeted in the fallout from the London Bridge killings and other attacks blamed on Islamic extremists.

Mr Gardiner said: "I called police because I saw a random van in my cul-de-sac with someone drunk in it and the door open". "This person was conscious". Solidarity was shown by not just Muslim leaders, but leaders from a variety of different religions, showing that while some people like Darren Osborne and Salman Abedi want there to be fear and division in our society, a lot of other people want to unite and find peace.
