Record 65.6 Million People Displaced Worldwide, Says UN”

The world broke a grim record previous year, with 65.6 million people living forcibly displaced from their homes, an increase of 300,000 over 2015.

By population, Syria still accounts for the biggest number of displaced people overall, with 12 million people (almost two thirds of the population) either displaced internally or having fled overseas as refugees or asylum seekers.

Syria's six-year conflict alone has sent more than 5.5 million people seeking safety in other countries, including 825,000 last year alone, making it the world's biggest producer of refugees.

The report notes that most refugees - 84 percent - are in developing countries, half of them children. For the fifth year in a row, the number of people displaced worldwide continued to increase from an already historically high level.

The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) on Tuesday appealed to stakeholders to support the rights of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Yobe with education, safe living condition and economic rehabilitation. In 2016, 10.3 million were newly displaced, an equivalent of one person every three seconds. Those who went missing, the number of whom is unknown, "were for the most part Syrian citizens and people from North African countries".

"We reflect on the courage of those who fled and the compassion of those who welcome them", the Secretary-General said in his video message for World Refugee Day.

The US Ambassador to South Sudan, Molly Phee said, "It is also an opportunity to honour those who provide them with life-saving protection and assistance despite harassment and threats". It is among the top three countries along with Syria and Afghanistan accounting for 55 per cent of refugees worldwide.

IRIN's coverage of refugees and forced displacement is year-round and not dependent on how many boats arrive in Italy or Greece.

Refugees shouldn't be left without attention, said Furio De Angelis, adding that the UNHCR Office hopes that worldwide donors will pay more attention to refugee problems.

The U.N. attributes a lot of that uptick to the Syrian war.

"Despite the heroic work of those involved in rescue at sea, the death toll continues to rise". South Sudan has become the fastest-growing refugee problem.

At the same time, returns of refugees and internally displaced people to their homes, combined with other solutions such as resettlement in third countries meant that for some, 2016 brought the prospect of improvement.

In 2016, war-ravaged South Sudan joined the list when approximately 737,400 people fled the country after peace efforts broke down in July.

And almost 70 years after Palestinians first fled Israel as it now stands, some 5.3 million Palestinians were living as refugees - the highest level ever recorded. Ongoing crises in sub-Saharan Africa have resulted in large and sudden population displacements, which results in neighboring countries opening their borders to those fleeing conflict.

Monday's report also pointed out that, despite huge focus on Europe's migrant crisis, it is poorer countries that host most of the world's refugees.
