Senate to finally unveil secret health care bill

Revising the ACA's mandates and eliminating its Medicaid funding would shrink the size of the coverage pool, which would drive up costs for insurance companies and hospitals, which would drive up premiums for patients, which would result in fewer people carrying insurance. Enough of them have voiced concerns to leave the bill's fate uncertain.

It faces uniform Democratic opposition.

"We don't know what the bill looks like because it's been written by 13 male Republicans behind a closed door", Senator Al Franken, D-Minnesota, told the crowd. The measure represents his attempt to satisfy GOP moderates and conservatives who've complained about the measure.

Senate GOP leaders on Thursday finally released their secret health-care reform bill, which would repeal Obamacare taxes, restructures subsidies to insurance customers that are based on their incomes, and phase out Medicaid's expansion program.

An exact reason for the secretive meetings or discussions between Senate Republicans, led by Majority Leader and Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell, has not been fully explained, but one nonprofit group alleged one motive: political campaign contributions.

Senate Republicans expressed skepticism Wednesday about a Washington Post report purportedly detailing the contents of the upper chamber's bill to replace ObamaCare.

It would keep income-based tax credits and subsidies - which are now available under the ACA - unlike the House measure, which tied them to age.

The sources are describing the bill on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to make the disclosures. Rob Portman, Maine Sen.

Johnson, R-Oshkosh, told CNN Wednesday morning that he has told Senate GOP leaders "I'm gonna need - and my constituents - time to evaluate exactly how this will affect them".

Following the official release of the discussion draft today, McConnell wants the bill voted on by the Senate's July 4th recess. That move could prompt states to reduce the size of their Medicaid programs.

"I wouldn't want to compare it to the House bill". Shelley Moore Capito, Ohio Sen.

The bill allows states to opt out of some restrictions imposed under Obamacare. Unlimited federal dollars now flow to each state for Medicaid, covering all eligible beneficiaries and services. The House Budget Committee hopes to mark up such a measure before June 30, panel members said. Many Republicans have long fought that organization because it provides abortions.

Schumer greets the press outside Senate GOP health care meeting. The so-called individual mandate - aimed at keeping insurance markets solvent by prompting younger, healthier people to buy policies - has always been one of the GOP's favorite targets.

The bill would repeal, retroactive to the beginning of 2016, the Obamacare rule requiring most Americans to have some form of health-coverage or pay a tax penalty fine.

Rauen said the secret drafting of the Senate bill is frustrating and he's anxious about losing coverage for a preexisting condition he has.

McConnell said earlier this week that a draft would be ready within days and that a vote could come as early as Thursday.

Some Republicans who could defect and oppose the bill include Texas Sen.
