Thousands attend slain Muslim teen's funeral in Virginia

Thousands attend slain Muslim teen's funeral in Virginia”

Police said they are continuing to investigate, but so far they have found no evidence pointing to a hate crime by Darwin Martinez Torres, a 22-year-old from El Salvador suspected of being in the US illegally.

Torres hit Hassanen with the bat and took her with him in his auto to another nearby location, where he assaulted her another time, Parker said.

A funeral is set for Wednesday for a 17-year-old Muslim girl from Virginia who police say was murdered this past weekend.

Fairfax Police have charged 22-year-old Darwin Martinez Torres with murder. Loudoun County Commonwealth's Attorney Jim Plowman says he supports the decision to keep the case in Fairfax County and "will lend any assistance if requested".

"If nobody gave you a compliment, she gave you a compliment", he said.

Hassanen, 17, was with a group of as many as 15 other teens who had left their Sterling-area mosque between Ramadan prayers to get food at a McDonald's, Parker said.

This undated image provided by the Hassanen family shows Nabra Hassanen in Fairfax, Va. Police in Fairfax, Va., said Monday, June 19, 2017, that "road rage" was to blame for the slaying of a 17-year-old muslim girl wh.

Twenty-two-year-old Darwin Martinez Torres is being held without bail on a murder charge.

At her funeral on Wednesday, an overflow area itself overflowed with people who came in solidarity.

They were making their way back to the All Dulles Area Muslim Society between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. Sunday, some walking and some riding bikes, when the suspect drove up to the group and began to argue with a male teen, Parker said.

Thousands have * a href="https://www.thepetitionsite.com/630/093/204/***/" target="_blank" *signed a petition calling on state and federal officials to investigate the 17-year-old's death as a hate crime. Martinez Torres caught up with them in a nearby parking lot, got out of his vehicle armed with a baseball bat and began chasing the group, she said.

Police say the girl was assaulted a second time before her body was dumped in a pond in Loudon County, but the Fairfax detectives continue to take the lead in the case. Retzer says she offered condolences and says Nabra will be greatly missed.

Chris Kpadeh, a junior at South Lakes High School, where Nabra attended, said she "was very happy, very positive".

Authorities have said an angry driver attacked Nabra with a baseball bat, put her in his vehicle and took her to another location where he attacked her again. After attacking Nabra and assaulting her, authorities found her body in a nearby pond. The mosque holds prayers throughout the night during the observance of Ramadan.

Police say Torres saw the group in the street and on the sidewalk. The BBC reports motives have not been identified, but a hate crime has not been ruled out. Fairfax County will prosecute the case.

An estimated 5,000 people attended the service at the All Dallas Area Muslim Society, where Imam Mohamed Magid remembered the teenager as a shining example of kindness and openness.

A SC man has been taken into custody in connection with setting fire to 17-year-old Nabra Hassanen's Washington, D.C., memorial in Dupont Circle.

A vigil for Hassanen is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Lake Anne Plaza in Reston, with #JusticeForNabra events also being held nationwide.

This photo provided by the Fairfax County Police Department shows Darwin Martinez Torres, of Sterling, Va. Martinez Torres was held on a murder charge Monday, June 19, 2017, in the slaying of a teenage Muslim girl who was attacked during a breakfast break from an all-night prayer session at her mosque.

He said his daughter "loved everybody". His public defender's office has declined to comment.
