Thousands Protest Verdict Handed To Officer Who Shot Philando Castile”

Castile's girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, is a passenger in the auto, along with her then-4-year-old daughter.

Yanez faced manslaughter charges over the July 2016 deadly shooting of Castile, who was black, at a traffic stop in suburban Falcon Heights.

Gov. Mark Dayton offered his condolences to Castile's family after the verdict, calling his death "a bad tragedy" in a statement that made no mention of Yanez.

Supporters of the family planned a 7 p.m. CDT rally at the Capitol. "I'm mad as hell right now, yes I am".

"He didn't deserve to die the way he did", Philando Castile's sister, Allysza, told reporters, through tears.

She says the verdict shows "the system continues to fail black people". "This time there should have been, in our opinion, a very, very different outcome". His girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, livestreamed the aftermath of the shooting on Facebook because, she said, she wanted to make sure the truth was known. Yanez had initially singled out Castile for a traffic stop because the officer thought he bared a resemblance to a robbery suspect.

She testified he had a gun, and a permit to carry it, for protection. The defence also argued Castile was high on marijuana and said that affected his actions.

Castile isn't the only one frustrated by the verdict, especially in the face of the Facebook Live video that seems to indicate Castile's cooperation before he was shot.

Yanez fired repeatedly at Castile, testifying later he though the man was reaching for a gun.

This is now the third straight day people have taken to the streets over this verdict.

Community activists expressed anger and disappointment, while officials appealed for calm. "It sends a very harsh message that we still have major race issues in this country".

Authorities repeatedly asked protesters to leave before making 18 arrests shortly after midnight on Saturday, the statement said. The jury heard two weeks of testimony and spent about 27 hours deliberating.

State prosecutors Rick Dusterhoft and Clayton Robinson, and federal prosecutor Jeff Paulsen, played squad vehicle video of the shooting repeatedly as they presented their case.

Tamir Rice, a 12-year-old boy with a pellet gun tucked into his waistband, was fatally shot by a white Cleveland police officer in November 2014.

Friday's acquittal of that officer caused massive riots throughout parts of Minnesota.

The NAACP Legal Defense Fund released a statement denouncing the jury's not guilty decision.

Another demonstrator said, "This was a case where we thought we would really get some justice, and it turns out we can't".

July 7: Protesters converge overnight at Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton's official residence in the state capital of St. Paul. When they get done with us, they're coming for you, for you, for you, and all your interracial children. Marchers also blocked commuter trains at one point and chanted "Yanez Guilty". "Justice was done", Gray told Reuters by telephone. While we cannot know the jury's thinking in Mr. Yanez's trial, we can know the context in which his trial took place, and should not be surprised by its outcome. She was praised for her split-second decision to stream the shooting's aftermath and her measured responses to Yanez, who had just fired shots into the vehicle and still had his gun out.
