Egypt sends fuel to power-starved Gaza, undercuts Abbas”

Hamas, which swept Palestinian parliamentary elections in 2006, has fought three wars with Israel since 2008.

Yousef Al-Kayali, Hamas chief of financial affairs in the Hamas-run administrative committee that rules the Gaza Strip told reporters that the trucks of fuels came from Egypt and arrived at the Gaza power station.

The sole power plant in electricity-starved Gaza Strip sputtered back to life Thursday after receiving fuel from Egypt - a shipment that resulted from a surprising alliance between bitter ex-rivals, including the territory's ruling Hamas and an exiled former Gaza strongman.

21 de junio de 2017, 15:41Gaza, Jun 21 (Prensa Latina) Egypt today sent 11 trucks loaded with half a million liters of fuel to the Gaza Strip to try to alleviate the energy crisis suffered by the Palestinian population of this coastal enclave. The Palestinian Energy Authority said the Israel Electric Corporation (IEC) had cut by eight megawatts the 120 megawatts it supplies to the Gaza Strip. Officials in Gaza said that even if they use the Egyptian fuel, it is only enough for two days and it does not make sense to operate the station for only two days. The cash-strapped Hamas authorities were unable to pay for the fuel.

Mohammad Thabet, director of public relations at Gaza Electricity Company, said that the Israeli authorities had reduced the capacity of the remaining lines, "Beit Lahia line, Jabaliya, central No. 7, and line 9 feeds to Rafah and Khan Younis" from 12 MW to 8 MW for each line, cutting overall service by 16 MW.

"There will still be troubles, but not the maximum troubles".

Egypt's first freely elected president, Morsi was ousted and imprisoned - after only one year in office - in a bloody military coup in 2013 led by then Defense Minister Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi.

But earlier this month, Egypt hosted a delegation of top Hamas officials.

"We must now find a definitive solution to the electricity crisis because its impact is catastrophic", said Naim.

Abbas has been stepping up pressure on Hamas for several months.

While the deal to supply Gaza with diesel fuel may undercut Abbas, Rumley cautioned against considering Dahlan a current threat to the PA leader. The talks between Hamas, Dahlan and Egypt have angered Abbas.

"In my opinion the strategy is to hurt Hamas and also to drag Hamas into a conflict with Israel". "If we have the money, we would not have gone to Dahlan's people", Hayya said. "I'm surprised, because they (Egypt) are a member of a coalition that considered Hamas a terrorist movement, and despite that, they had these meetings and agreements", said Jamal Muheisin, a senior member of Abbas' Fatah party.
