Pakistan's foreign ministry confirms downing of Iran drone”

The deployment of drones has proven a contentious topic.

He said Pakistan's position on U.S. drone strikes is very clear.

Pakistan said today that it attached importance to its longstanding relationship with the U.S. which is "critical" for promoting peace and security in the region even as it opposed America's unilateral drone strikes on its territory.

About the Pakistani diplomats who went missing in Afghanistan recently, Zakaria said: "We are in contact with the Kabul government for safe and early recovery of our two diplomatic staffers who were abducted while travelling from Jalalabad to Islamabad". To counter the threat caused by the militants, USA officials recently revealed that Washington aimed to harden its stance toward Pakistan and devise a new policy for Afghanistan.

This was stated by Foreign Office Spokesperson Nafees Zakariya at his weekly news briefing in Islamabad today. Though cross-border strikes are an ongoing problem on both sides of the border, the Afghan government tends to dramatically overstate this issue, blaming Pakistan, and militants therein, for virtually every major terror attack that happens.

Islamabad has repeatedly condemned such strikes in public, but United States diplomatic cables published by Wikileaks in 2011 suggested the Pakistani military tacitly approved of the drone programme.

USA drone strikes have slowed to a trickle in the past 18 months.Pakistan has received more than $33 billion in U.S. assistance since 2002, but some aid was withheld a year ago because of Washington's dissatisfaction with Islamabad's actions against militants. "We are determined to that", he said.

Zakaria, the Foreign Ministry spokesman, said, "Pakistan attaches importance to its relationship with the United States".

"We firmly believe that continued close cooperation between our two countries is critical for promoting peace and security in the region and beyond". The confirmation of the Foreign Office on Wednesday that an Iranian drone was downed by Pakistan Air Force deep inside Pakistani territory in Panjgur sector on Pak-Iran border in Balochistan is yet another manifestation of a provocation by the other side.

"We expect the Pakistani officials to control the borders, arrest the terrorists and shut down their bases".

Iran's southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchistan, which borders Pakistan and Afghanistan, has been the scene of armed clashes in recent months between Iranian forces and Sunni militants.

The border area has always been plagued by both drug smuggling gangs and separatist militants.

Earlier on June 12, the USA drone strikes hit a compound in northwestern Hangu district near Pakistan-Afghanistan border, reportedly killing a high profile militant commander along with two other militants.
