Parents unhappy with spread of toothpick crossbows

Parents unhappy with spread of toothpick crossbows”

And parents in the United Kingdom, already frustrated by the fidget spinners craze , could find themselves facing demands for more risky toys.

The crossbow is created to shoot toothpicks, but can be used to propel metal nails or needles for up to 20 meters.

(Web Desk) - Across China many concerned parents are raising their voice against a new small toy - a crossbow that can shoot sharp toothpicks.

Parents have called for the toys to be banned out of fears that someone will be seriously injured.

Police in Chengdu, a major city in China, are pushing for a ban on the devices, but even that may not stop their spread.

Cheap plastic versions of the miniature crossbows can be bought for about four yuan (£0.5; $0.6) while the price of the metal versions is around 10 yuan.

Several shops on streets near schools lure children into buying these risky gadgets. Besides, the toy can transform into a risky weapon if the toothpicks are swapped for nails and needles. They sell from $2 to $20.

Parents say that children don't understand the danger and shoot people for fun.

The toy, if used with a toothpick, can puncture a balloon and pierce cardboard when shot directly at it, the Shanghai Daily reported. "It will cause accidents sooner or later", one parent wrote on Chinese social media site Weibo, Agence France-Presse reports.

South China Morning Post reports some of the packaging on these toys claims it is powerful enough to "break paper cartons, cans and even fight cockroaches", while stressing it is "not lethal".
