Tropical Storm Cindy Downgraded to Tropical Depression

Tropical Storm Cindy Downgraded to Tropical Depression”

At 10 a.m. CDT Thursday, Cindy was about 165 miles (265 kilometers) northwest of Morgan City and moving to the north at 13 mph (20 kph).

Businesses in Ensley, AL, which is west of Birmingham in Jefferson County, AL, took significant damage after a tornado touched down.

Dean Argo, a spokesman for the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board said one employee of the liquor store was hurt.

People traveling to the mountains should want to stay alert to the weather. The worst weather was on the east side of the storm.

Entergy Corp, the biggest power company in the Gulf Coast area, said just around 4,200 of its 2.9 million customers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas were without power Thursday morning.

Storm Cindy could bring up to 15 inches (38cm) of rain to southern parts of Louisiana, Alabama and Western Florida today. Cindy dropped 6.8 inches of rain on Prattville, AL. The family had been vacationing in Fort Morgan from the St. Louis, Missouri area.

"The child sustained a very severe head injury, had to be pulled out from underneath the timber", said Baldwin Co., Alabama Sheriff Huey Hoss Mack.

First responders declared the boy dead on the scene, according to police.

The storm made landfall in the Gulf Coast Thursday morning, but circulation from the system is bringing moisture across the southeast United States.

Off the coast of Texas, rough seas also led to the rescue of a shrimp trawler in danger of sinking.

Winds in the Galveston County town of San Leon exceeded 50 miles per hour but were slightly weaker along other parts of the Texas coast southeast of Houston.

On the MS coast, a waterspout came ashore in Biloxi even as heavy rains slackened early Wednesday. However, a Coastal Flood Advisory is till in effect until 10 a.m. for Galveston and Brazoria counties. Still, a few showers or storms could develop, but the coverage should be fairly limited.

The southeast corner of the state from El Dorado to south of Pine Bluff through Helena West-Helena is under a slight risk for severe weather and could see severe storms as early as Thursday afternoon and evening. Fort Walton Beach spokeswoman Jo Soria said fallen trees hit houses and cars in what she called "pockets of wind damage" in two or three residential neighbourhoods.

Authorities continued to warn that driving rains being pulled out of the Gulf could still cause risky flash floods. "Additional rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches with isolated maximum amounts of 8 inches over southern MS, southern and central Alabama and extreme western Florida Panhandle are expected through Friday morning".

Some parts of MS have reported up to eight and a half inches of rain since Cindy's arrival, and Texas Gov. Greg Abbot has raised the readiness level of Texas' State Operations Center in response to the onslaught of heavy rain and high winds.
