Village Assistant Demanded Rs 1 Lakh Bribe, Reveals Dead Farmer's Wife

Village Assistant Demanded Rs 1 Lakh Bribe, Reveals Dead Farmer's Wife”

The protesters stormed the area alleging that the Revenue Department officers from the Chembanoda office were acting insensitively to their pleas even after several round of discussions held with the top-level revenue authorities to clear the pending disputes over accepting land tax in the village. Revenue Minister E Chandrasekharan sought a report from Kozhikode District Collector U V Jose on the incident.

They withdrew from the protest only after securing an assurance from the Collector that the pending files of the farmer would be cleared at the earliest, besides considering government job opportunity for one of the family members.

The incident comes at a time when the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) has been waging a political attack against the Bharatiya Janata Party-led union government, which it is fighting as opposition in Kerala, for allegedly anti-farmer policies.

Joy's brother, Johny, said the officials had refused to accept the tax on flimsy grounds as he had not bribed them.

"The state cabinet will take a compassionate approach in this case and will do the needful", Mani told the media here.

According to a report in The Hindu, police found out from his suicide note that he was turned away by the staff of the Chembanod village office when he went there to pay land tax. Following that protest, the authorities accepted the land tax.

Last year in Thiruvananthapuram a rubber tapper had set fire to a village office after officials delayed title deed of his land for nearly eight years.

"I think Joy got angry as he was fed up with the officials". Joy possessed 1 acre of land. The land is registered in Joy's wife's name. He said he would also ask for a write-off of the farmer's loan of Rs 10 lakh, IANS reported.
