Five GOP senators now oppose health bill-enough to sink it

The bill in its current form may not just alienate conservative voters and lawmakers who think it doesn't go far enough but also may not assuage moderates like Heller and others enough to get their votes, either.

Mr Trump has now acknowledged in an interview with Fox News that a lack of support from the four Republicans leaves the party's overhaul of former President Barack Obama's signature healthcare policy on a "very, very narrow path" to victory.

Already conservative GOP Sens.

The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office has estimated that the House bill would kick 23 million people off their healthcare plans.

Heller, a Republican who is up for re-election in 2018, is the Democrats' top target in the upcoming cycle.

The Senate bill would make major cuts in the federal-state Medicaid program for poor and disabled people. Some on Wall Street may have been thinking, like conservative critics of the senate TrumpCare bill, that those out-year Medicaid cuts may never happen. For states that opted into the expansion, people whose household incomes were up to 138% of the federal poverty level could qualify for coverage.

Lynch said the shift in Medicaid funding - from 50-50 state and federal funding to roughly 70 percent funded by states - will be particularly devastating to states that took advantage of Obamacare's Medicaid expansion in recent years, including MA, saying: "Medicaid expansion, that'll kill MA". It would also slap annual spending caps on the overall Medicaid program, which since its inception in 1965 has provided states with unlimited money to cover eligible costs.

Senate Rand Paul (R-KY), who does not support the bill as it now stands, also appeared on the show and said he would like to "legalize low-priced insurance", and ultimately have Medicaid patients go on "inexpensive" plans - likely private plans.

Cassidy's concerns have critics of the Senate bill hoping they can persuade him to oppose the proposal. Sen.

The answer, at this late juncture, is pretty simple: you should be calling those Republican senators that are most on-the-fence about the bill, whether because they're in politically competitive states, or because their states rely on things like the Affordable Care Act's Medicaid expansion. If it fails to reduce the deficit sufficiently or results in too many people losing insurance coverage, McConnell could fail to secure the 50 GOP votes he needs to secure passage.

"I will study the bill to determine whether it fulfills President Trump's campaign promises to lower premiums, maintain coverage and protect those with preexisting conditions without mandates", he said. Sandoval is a very popular governor.

Heller got an opponent for next year when first-year Democratic Rep. Jacky Rosen announced this week she would seek his Senate seat.

Like Obamacare, this bill has no bipartisan support, although some Republicans say they're open to negotiation.

Hours after the measure was unveiled to Congress, Rand Paul of Kentucky, Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, Ted Cruz of Texas and Mike Lee of Utah said in a joint statement that they were not ready to vote in favour of the legislation.

Predictably, Democrats were firm in their opposition to the GOP bill. Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, who has not suggested she opposes the measure, declined to comment on its components when asked at a news conference Friday.
