Midlands Residents Honor Victims of Pulse Nightclub Shooting

On the anniversary of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, the Diocese of Orlando broadcast via Facebook Live a prayer service attended by clergy of various faiths to remember June 12 the 49 who died during the largest mass shooting by a single gunman in the country's history.

With the massacre, more LGBT people were killed in the United States in 2016 than any of the 20 years since such record-keeping began, according to a report by the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs.

Guests visit the memorial outside the Pulse Nightclub on the one-year anniversary of the shooting in Orlando, Florida, U.S., June 12, 2017.

The evening vigil came after a full day of emotional tributes to the people killed. "It's a lot of love messages, it's a lot of hugs not hate", said Marcelle Robustelli. "I feel like every piece that they collected was deliberate and serves a point and it just ties back to remembering those 49 people and spreading love".

Thousands of people showed up throughout the day- packing Lake Eola for the Orlando Love Ceremony.

Later Monday morning, hundreds of people dropped off flowers, drawings and cards at a memorial near Pulse.

Two women, one with a rainbow flag in her hair, embraced as the names of the victims were read aloud.

Many at the memorial service Monday say, if the goal of the shooter was to divide the community, his actions have had the opposite effect.

"One of the things we can do as members of the LGBTQ community is remember events like this", said Steven Sanchez. "A community that is going to shout out to everybody around us that we need to love, love, love", Smith said.

People who lost friends in this tragedy said they're still heartbroken, and that will never go away. They have been together for nearly two years and are celebrating how far the LGBTQ Community has come.
