Sri Lanka coach Graham Ford steps down before Zimbabwe series

Sri Lanka coach Graham Ford steps down before Zimbabwe series”

Graham Ford has stepped down as Sri Lanka's head coach.

Since 2011, Sri Lanka have had eight head coaches (including interim appointments) in nine separate stints - Ford having worked two shifts: from 2012 to 2014, then again from February past year to now.

The 56-year-old led the team to memorable test and twenty20 series wins over Australia but Sri Lanka's performance this year has been inconsistent with the team suffering their first ever test loss to Bangladesh and a whitewash in South Africa.

"It's been a privilege to work with these talented young men over the past 15 months", said Ford.

Ford, who was previously with Sri Lanka from 2012 to 2014, had said he faced a huge rebuilding task when he returned to the team in February a year ago, when the islanders had dropped down the rankings.

"Sri Lanka has grown on me, and although we've made the decision to part ways where coaching is concerned, she will always have a little piece of my heart".

Sri Lanka Cricket President Thilanga Sumathipala thanked Ford for his contribution and also mentioned the importance of his hard work that the coach put in to improve cricket in the island nation.

Ford had since met with the board in Colombo but, before his departure from Sri Lanka, struck an optimistic tone about the team's prospects, saying: "The character that [the team] continues to show is really exciting".

The decision was reached by mutual consent according to a statement released by Sri Lanka Cricket.

Ford had previously coached Sri Lanka for two years in 2012-2014.

Sri Lanka will play a home series of five ODI matches and one Test against Zimbabwe from the end of this month.

It was rumored that Ford and SLC's new Circket Manager, the former world cup winning team member Asanka Gurusinha did not see eye to eye on many issues leading to a conflict. It's time to allow them to freely go around doing what they can do.
