Donald Trump ends iftar dinner tradition

Donald Trump ends iftar dinner tradition”

After the practice started while Bill Clinton was at the White House, it continued during the tenures of George W Bush and Barack Obama.

It's not the first time the administration has broken the White House's Ramadan tradition.

But, the report noted that President Trump has ended a long tradition of celebrating Ramazan and Eid at the White House.

The prime minister said Eid teaches peace, sense of fellow feeling and fraternity and brings message of joy to the people of all walks of life. Prominent members of the American Muslim community have so far been invited to the dinner.

However, the first such dinner dates all the way back to 1805, when Thomas Jefferson invited an ambassador from Tunis to the White House. "The community spirit I felt at Ramadan food banks in Montreal and Toronto reminds us all - no matter our backgrounds, we're in this together".

The president concluded the statement with the words "Eid Mubarak", which are the traditional Muslim greeting meaning "blessed celebration".

Ramadan is considered the Muslim holy month, marked by prayer and fasting.

USA secretaries of state have also traditionally hosted Iftar dinners since 1999 ― but not this year. "We celebrate a sense of accomplishment that we completed the fasting for self-control and that our home is Canada and we are in 150th year of our existence".

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson also broke with tradition by not hosting an Iftar dinner at the State Department during Ramadan, as has happened for the past two decades.

Mr Trump has been strongly criticised for his proposal in December 2015 to ban Muslims from entering the U.S. and also for his executive order as President to temporarily ban all immigration and refugees from seven Muslim-majority countries.
