Federal Bureau of Investigation officials: Airport attacker tried, but failed, to buy gun in US”

Montreal Police guard the front of the four storey building in Montreal on June 21, 2017, where Amor Ftouhi, who is suspected of stabbing a MI airport police officer, lived before traveling to the United States earlier this month.

Timothy Wiley, FBI public affairs specialist, holds a photo Amor Ftouhi after a news conference in Detroit, Thursday, June 22, 2017.

He legally entered the US through NY on June 16. He could face additional charges.

"He certainly appeared to understand what I was reading and indicated to me he understood what I was reading to him and that it represented the facts alleged in support of the charge", Koelzer told Judge Stephanie Dawkins Davis.

He was in an area of the main terminal not covered by security scanners.

Amor Ftouhi, 49, a Canadian from Tunisia, is charged in the attack.

Ftouhi attempted to buy a gun in MI between the dates of Sunday, June 18, and Wednesday, June 21, when the attack on Neville occurred, federal officials previously said. He's accused of stabbing airport police Lt. Jeff Neville after yelling "Allahu akbar", the Arabic phrase for "God is great". He followed that up with something along the lines of: "You have killed people in Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan, and we are all going to die", the federal complaint said.

Airport officials planned to hold a news conference later Thursday, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation planned to brief reporters in Detroit.

"At this time, we view him as a lone-wolf attacker", Gelios said.

"We continue to have no information that suggests Ftouhi's attack on Lt. Neville was part of a wider plot, nor do we have any indication he was aided in this incident or had any associates associated to this incident".

A police officer stands outside the home of Amor Ftouhi, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on June 21, 2017.

Luciano Piazza, the building's owner and landlord, said Ftouhi moved into the apartment with his wife and children five years ago. Gelios said he will not, at this time, offer any details about where Ftouhi was shopping.

Ftouhi was a native of Tunis, Tunisia and a Canadian citizen.

According to a Flint Patch profile, he is a truck driver by trade, while Canada's CTV News cites Facebook posts in which Ftouhi said he worked at insurance company Industrielle Alliance. He therefore qualifies for a federally appointed defender and will be represented by Joan Morgan, a Flint-based attorney.
