General Motors Produces 130 Self-Driving Electric Cars”

The largest United States automaker will expand its fleet of autonomous Chevrolet Bolts to 180 of the electric vehicles, chief executive officer Mary Barra said on June 13.

These Chevrolet Bolt self-driving test vehicles are almost complete and ready for deployment.

The reason for Tuesday's presser is because this is the first full-scale plant that's creating the autonomous vehicle and they're using something that was already being built there - the Bolt EV.

GM CEO Mary Barra wouldn't say Tuesday if the company plans to make more self-driving Bolts. "The level of integration in these vehicles is on par with any of our production vehicles, and that is a great advantage".

The Bolt is a fully electric auto that went on sale late previous year.

The new version of the self-driving Bolts must still be driven with a person behind the wheel who is alert and ready to take control if necessary. In January, the two companies began testing vehicles on public roads in Warren, Michigan.

"To achieve what we want from self-driving cars, we must deploy them at scale", Cruise Automation CEO Kyle Vogt said in a press release.

There's a potential new major player in the autonomous vehicle industry, and its a seasoned player in the automotive market. That fleet is expected to be tested within a few years.

Testing of the second-generation vehicles has begun in San Francisco and is to expand to the Detroit area and Scottsdale, Ariz., in the coming months. The permit allows it to conduct test drives in three vehicles...

In March of a year ago, GM acquired Cruise Automation, a San Francisco company focused on autonomous driving programs and software.

GM paid more than $1 billion for the Silicon Valley startup Cruise Automation in March 2016, and relatively quickly launched a fleet of more than 50 automated Bolt EVs based on technology from Cruise and developed internally.

"We intend for GM to be the leader and not only in development, but the leader in deployment", Barra told reporters from GM's assembly plant in Orion Township, Michigan, where the company is building the self-driving Chevy Bolt test vehicles.

The Chevrolet Bolt or Chevrolet Bolt EV is a front-engine, five-door all-electric subcompact hatchback with an all-electric range of 238 miles.
