GOP Senators Lay Out Demands on Health Bill

President Donald Trump seemed to confirm reports that he called the House of Representatives' healthcare bill "mean" during a "Fox & Friends" interview that aired Sunday morning. But I think we're going to get it. At least four GOP senators-along with all Democrats-have voiced opposition to the bill.

Then he criticizes two prominent Democratic senators. "We won't get one Democrat vote". I don't see that leading it. That would allow the GOP leadership to show flexibility, while also adding credibility to the continuous-coverage mechanism. "The level of hostility".

Johnson's Democratic counterpart representing Wisconsin, Sen. "I'd like to keep her right where she is because our record is extraordinary against her".

ROVNER: Well, the piece of the Affordable Care Act that's most at stake is what we've just been talking about, the people who buy their own insurance in the individual market.

Despite President Trump's criticism that the House bill was "mean", he tweeted on Thursday following the draft's release saying he was "very supportive" of the Senate bill and looked forward to "making it really special". Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and his colleagues are determined to get rid of it.

"I can not support a piece of legislation that takes insurance away from tens of millions of Americans and tens of thousands of Nevadans", Heller said.

Some of the sharpest remarks came from a Republican outside of Congress: Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who ran against Trump for the party's presidential nomination. "And small tweaks over the course of the next couple weeks, under the guise of making these bills easier to stomach, can not change the fundamental meanness at the core of this legislation".

"Let's not rush this process", Johnson pleaded. "Healthcare's a very complicated subject from the standpoint that you move it this way, and this group doesn't like it".

"And honestly", he said, "nobody can be totally happy, even without the votes".

McConnell has said he's willing to make changes to win support, and in the week ahead, plenty of backroom bargaining is expected.

McConnell unveiled the bill, which had been crafted behind closed doors, on Thursday and is aiming for a vote before the Senate recesses for the July 4 holiday break. "Lower premiums and I will happily be part of it", Cruz said.

Ron Johnson, R-Wis., one of the five senators opposing the bill. "They're not going to go down after the Republican bill".

On Friday, Sanders tweeted that thousands would die if the Senate passed its version of the health care bill as it now exists.

Pleasing both moderates and conservatives in the Senate may prove more hard. He wants a vote before people realize his bill is hazardous to their health.

The president said he thinks Republicans in the Senate are doing enough to push through the bill.

Cornyn made the comments Sunday at a private gathering hosted by the libertarian Koch brothers in Colorado.

Last month, the House passed their version of the bill, which would strip health care from 24 million people, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.

The measure calls for reducing money for Medicaid.

Sen. Dean Heller (R-NV) is the fifth Republican in the Senate to object to the plan. Medicaid funds health care for almost 1 in 5 Americans, people with low incomes, people with disabilities and those in nursing homes or receiving long-term care.

"I want to get to yes, and the way to get to yes is to fix the underlying problems".

"I believe that the bill that the Senate will vote on, assuming they get to that point, will have some sort of mechanism to cause participation in it", said former GOP Senate staffer Rodney Whitlock.

"We don't have much of a choice, too".

He said they had "at best, a 50-50 chance".
