Gulf diplomatic crisis: US says some demands on Qatar 'difficult to meet'”

But Qatari officials didn't budge from their previous insistence that they won't sit down with Saudi Arabia and other Arab nations to negotiate an end to the crisis while under siege.

Turkey has been a powerful and outspoken regional ally of Qatar after the Arab countries cut diplomatic ties.

The Saudi-led boycott, which enlisted other GCC states and Egypt to isolate Qatar, was imposed several weeks after the high-profile visit to Riyadh by the USA president, Donald Trump, during which he re-prioritised the kingdom over its main regional rival, Iran - the regional clout of which had risen after the Obama administration brokered a nuclear deal with Tehran.

"We don't want European mediation, and I don't think the Europeans want to be mediators".

Saudi Arabia and its allies have put enormous pressure on Qatar to meet their demands.

These include an immediate closure of Qatar's Al Jazeera TV station, a halt to its military cooperation with Turkey, cutting off of relations with Iran and payments of reparations.

He said Turkey would continue to support Qatar against the many sanctions it has faced since several Arab countries moved earlier this month to isolate the country for its alleged support of terrorism.

The demands called for the creation of a 10-year mechanism to ensure Qatar is complying with the agreement.

Bahrain, Yemen and the Maldives have also said they are indefinitely severing ties with Qatar.

Qatar has denied the accusations and called the collective decision "unjustified".

Thani said the demands are not "reasonable and actionable" - two criteria laid down by the U.S. State Department this week in an attempt to mediate the dispute.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday dubbed the demands made by Saudi Arabia and three other nations to Doha to end a blockade as an attack to Qatar's sovereignty right.

Mr Erdogan also told reporters he has offered to open a military base in Saudi Arabia, and is yet to receive a response.

"Demanding that Turkey pull its soldiers is unfortunately also disrespectful toward Turkey", he said.

"The alternative is not escalation", he said. "The scariest part for us is there used to be this impression by the public that we all had security everywhere we went", said Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH).

"We believe our allies and partners are stronger when they are working together towards one goal which we all agree is stopping terrorism and countering extremism".

The US maintains its largest concentration of military personnel in the Middle East at Qatar's Al Udeid Air Base.

"The measures that have been taken are there to stay until there is a long-term solution to the issue", Emirati Ambassador to the U.S. Yousef al-Otaiba said in an interview.
