Health care shows difference between conservatives, liberals

Nevada Republican Sen. Dean Heller says he opposes the GOP bill scuttling much of the Obama health care law, complicating the effort by party leaders to guide the measure through the Senate.

"When the Republicans proposed changes to the Affordable Care Act", said Vilsack, "they promised that more people would be covered, costs would be lowered, and Medicaid would be protected".

Last week, Senate Republicans unveiled their health care bill after crafting it for weeks behind closed doors.

ROVNER: Well, of course, there's only 52 Republicans in the Senate.

The Republican-led Senate is set to vote on the Better Care Restoration Act before the 4th of July congressional recess.

"It shifts the cost from healthy people to sick people, it shifts the cost from younger people to older people, there's a lot of cost-shifting going on but not cost-reduction, and that's the problem", he said.

"No argument against Trumpcare is more eloquent than the grave consequences it means in people's lives", she wrote colleagues.

The 142-page bill - known as the Better Care Reconciliation Act - would make sharp cuts in Medicaid and eliminate Obamacare's individual mandate, under which Americans pay a fine if they do not purchase health insurance. Paul said, "My hope is not to defeat the bill".

Rand Paul of Kentucky, Ted Cruz of Texas, Mike Lee of Utah and Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, oppose the current version of the bill for being too similar to Obamacare.

President Donald Trump is now personally trying to woo fellow Republicans to get behind the health care legislation as five GOP senators have now publicly said they won't support the bill.

In an interview with Fox News Channel, Trump was asked about the four conservatives opposing the bill. "We'll have to see".

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) speaks to members of the press during a news conference May 23, 2013, on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. The bill would also bar using tax credits to buy coverage that includes abortions. Moderates are also wary of the legislation, which would make deep cuts to Medicaid and raise premiums for the poor, elderly, and sick, while benefiting people who are younger and wealthier. Reducing taxes, Republicans argue, will boost the economy, and shrinking spending on programs such as Medicaid will slow the growth of the federal debt. "There are things in this bill which adversely affect my state that are peculiar to my state, a couple of things I'm concerned about", Cassidy said. The budget office analysis of the Senate measure is expected early next week.

The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association represents plans that are the backbone of HealthCare.gov and state health insurance markets created under former President Barack Obama's law.
