Mastiff named Martha wins World's Ugliest Dog Contest

Mastiff named Martha wins World's Ugliest Dog Contest”

In winning, Martha also earned another - one might say greater - honor: her place enshrined on an illustrious list of champions that dates back almost three decades.

When she's not wowing the crowds, Martha lives on 11 acres at Burkard's home, where she hangs out with a St Bernard named Blue, explores the banks of a lake and rests underneath apricot and cherry trees. Most of the entrants are older, smaller dogs who win here.

Martha, a 56-kilogram Neapolitan mastiff with a face that could be charitably described as relaxed, has been crowned "World's Ugliest Dog" in the US.

Martha is big, ugly, lazy and gassy.

But it was clear from the start that Martha bore the easy confidence of a champion. And when Martha's owner tried to sell her on Craigslist, Shirley Zindler, the founder of the Dogwood Animal Rescue Project, an animal fostering group, came to the mastiff's aid.

We have a new World's Ugliest Dog and she's a big one.

As she was awarded her first-place prize - $1500, a trophy and a trip to NY for media appearances - Martha appeared unmoved, rolling over to let her voluminous folds of her droopy jowls flop on to the stage.

Chinese Crested dog named Chase walks on stage during the 2017 World's Ugliest Dog contest at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California, on June 23, 2017.

Although, some may think it's cruel to enter a dog into such a contest, Zindler says it's actually all about promoting rescuing and adopting dogs that aren't "traditionally handsome".

In a competition that is usually dominated by the hairless, old and tiny, it was the young and massive who took this year's price. Sweepee Rambo, a blind Chinese Crested dog, won the annual World's Ugliest Dog contest.
