Mourners remember U.S. student held prisoner by North Korea

Mourners remember U.S. student held prisoner by North Korea”

We condemn any and all messages that endorse hatred and convey insensitivity toward a tragic event such as the one that Otto Warmbier and his family suffered.

Attendee D'Shon Shapiro told CNN that she and a friend, Molly Cain, know Warmbier's parents from youth sports.

Andrew Kraner, 25, who knew Warmbier from school and swimming "up the hill at the YMCA", said the funeral featured a blend of serious and lighthearted moments - which "really spoke to Otto's character".

Sharing his views to over 200,000 of his followers, the popular Facebook social justice advocate has taken aim at Warmbier, the 22-year-old University of Virginia student who died after spending a year and a half in a North Korean prison. "He did things because he wanted to do them".

Warmbier's treatment by the reclusive North Korean regime sparked strong condemnation in Washington, and inflamed already high tensions stoked by Pyongyang's atomic tests and missile launches.

Warmbier died of unknown causes on June 19, a week after he was returned to the United States in a coma.

He was arrested and sentenced to 15 years of hard labor after he was accused of taking a propaganda poster from his hotel.

Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, who had met with North Korean officials in NY to press for Warmbier's release, attended the funeral.

Moon's remarks echoed that of Trump, who said in a tweet on Tuesday Chinese efforts to persuade North Korea to rein in its nuclear program have failed.

"It would be easy at a moment like this to focus on all that we lost - future time that won't be spent with a warm, engaging, brilliant young man whose curiosity and enthusiasm for life knew no bounds", Fred and Cindy Warmbier said in a statement. "Some good things came of this trip".

When the North Koreans began calling their American hostages "prisoners of war", Revere realized the situation was changing.

North Korea still holds Kim Sang Duk and Kim Hak-song, academics who worked at the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology, and a businessman named Kim Dong Chul. "And no excuse for the way they've treated so many others", he said. They gave an interview to Fox News host Tucker Carlson, in which they said the State Department had been "absolutely no" help in getting their son back and that when they met with then-Secretary of State John Kerry, they found him to be "totally exasperated and overwhelmed with North Korea". The attendees included Ambassador Joseph Yun, the US special envoy who traveled to Pyongyang to bring Warmbier back.

"I feel in a certain way I became part of their extended family", he said.
