NYCFC's David Villa is (still) living up to the hype

NYCFC's David Villa is (still) living up to the hype”

For Wright-Phillips and his Red Bulls teammates, the heat on Father's Day afternoon in Philadelphia was their weather challenge. He had two good chances that would have turned into goals had Luis Robles not made excellent saves, and the 19-year-old was a constant presence as NYCFC poured pressure on the Red Bulls.

By halftime, NYCFC had four shots on target while the Red Bulls had none.

Harrison's goal was just the sixth goal for NYCFC in eight matches against the Red Bulls.

NYC (9-5-3) won for the first time at Red Bull Arena and for the second time in seven MLS meetings with the Red Bulls (7-8-2).

Ben Sweat scored his first MLS goal and assisted on Jack Harrison's goal as New York City FC beat the New York Red Bulls 2-0 in the Hudson River Derby.

It also was NYCFC's second derby win against six losses. Conversely, the red Bulls had more total passes (213-162) and had huge advantages in passing accuracy (79-67 percent) and overall possession (57-43 percent). "I believe if you want to win football matches you have to match the competitiveness of the other team and i think today we did it brilliantly".

"You have to give them credit, they adjusted certain things that they do and they physically put a lot more into the game", Red Bulls head coach Jesse Marsch said.

On defense, NYCFC allowed just one shot on goal, which goalkeeper Sean Johnson handled easily in the 80th minute. We don't value possession, but the game wasn't so lopsided. But on this Saturday, it was the fans in blue doing all the singing.

While the Red Bulls beat NYCFC at their own possessive game, NYCFC found a way to adjust to the press from the home side, even without midfielder Maxi Moralez, who sat out with injury. They are also a team that has clearly fallen behind NYCFC, and they will need to improve considerably if they are going to have a chance of reasserting control when the teams meet again at Yankee Stadium on August 6.
