Oddball musical Dear Evan Hansen wins six Tony awards

Oddball musical Dear Evan Hansen wins six Tony awards”

The show opened to critical acclaim back in November 2016, and chronicles a lonely, awkward high school student, Evan Hansen (Platt) caught up in a lie that goes viral after a fellow loner, Connor Murphy (Mike Faist) commits suicide early in the school year.

Midler then went on to thank her many female role models before expressing gratitude for a whole host of others. "Oslo", a three-hour meditation on diplomacy, was named best play.

Midler said her teachers took her "under their wing", encouraging her to enter speech competitions. "This thing has the ability to lift your spirits in these awful times", she continued.

Jonah also posted a photo of Platt's performance during the show, writing that his brother was "killin it". "The things that make you odd are the things that make you powerful".

Gavin Creel, victor of best featured actor in a musical for "Hello Dolly", thanked his alma mater, the University of MI. Nixon was one of the most politically outspoken winners, giving a shout-out to people who refuse to just stand by and watch when bad things happen in the world. That was until all hell broke loose and it turned out "Moonlight" had won the Oscar.

"A Doll's House, Part 2" star Laurie Metcalf won her first Tony Award for best performance by an actress in a play. She's been twice-nominated for an Oscar for her roles in "The Rose" and "For the Boys", but has yet to secure an Academy Award.

Over on the play slide, Oslo took home top honors for Best Play and, in a surprise, Best Featured Actor in a Play (Michael Aronov).

'Groundhog Day, ' an adaptation of the film, was shut out.

Those who tune in Sunday night will get to see Spacey do impersonations of former President Bill Clinton, Jack Lemmon and Johnny Carson.

Spacey peppered his routines - aided by Whoopi Goldberg and Stephen Colbert, to name a few guests - with a healthy dose of self-deprecating humor, making a storyline out of the fact that he wasn't the first choice for hosting duties. The original cast recording from Broadway's COME FROM AWAY comes in at No. 19.

Ashley also acknowledged the "extraordinary" "Come From Away" Canadian co-creators Irene Sankoff and David Hein who he said told the show's story "with so much grace and heart". He dedicated it to 9/11 first responders and all those who were generous on that bad day.

"I'm coming out", he sang in a black and gold dress, before adding: "Wait, no, wait". "Thank you, Broadway community". Later, he and Patti LuPone closed the show with a lovely duet of "The Curtain Falls" by Bobby Darin, a role he played onscreen. Also recognized was the late August Wilson, whose "Jitney" was called the Best Revival of a Play.

Other winners of the night included Kevin Kline for Best Actor in a Play for his work in the revival of "Present Laughter", and Cynthia Nixon with the second Tony of her career for Best Featured Actress in a play in the revival of Lillian Hellman's "The Little Foxes". I want to show what a really moving Tony performance can do, so here is James Corden's opening number for the 2016 Tony Awards.
