Phoenix Flights Cancelled Due to Extreme Heat

Phoenix Flights Cancelled Due to Extreme Heat”

Authorities say the heat was likely a factor in the deaths.

Sin City is sizzling in triple-digit heat this week.

More than 40 American Eagle regional flights scheduled to take off or land at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport between 3 and 6 p.m. local time were canceled. (Seven were canceled on Monday as well.) Regional jets can not take off in temperatures hotter than 117, reported CNN Money, which was the temperature Tuesday and the expected temperature for Wednesday as well. Excessive heat warnings have been extended through at least the end of the week from Arizona to northern California.

The NWS also said in the city of Phoenix, and the temperature will reach up to 120 degrees, and not only that the temperature of the adjacent areas, in fact, the city of Las Vegas and southern part of California will also feel somehow same temperature and heat waves.

In Phoenix, temperatures were expected to top out around 120 degrees.

Pilot Smith said electronics overheat, brake temperatures run high and internal machinery gets overly hot and then toss in ground temperatures racing past 110 degrees "and things begin to break down".

In a story June 20, The Associated Press reported that airplanes take off and stay aloft because of lift, the force from the movement of air underneath the plane's wings that push it upward. Thin air makes it hard for planes to get lift.

Arizona is seeing some of the most dramatic temperatures Tuesday, but the heat wave is being felt across Nevada and California, too. "At this time, we do not anticipate any further disruption to flights on Wednesday, but we will reevaluate tomorrow morning in case the forecast is adjusted", the airline said. However, the American Airlines' planes, the Bombardier CRJ, is only cleared to take off with an exterior temperature of 118 degrees. Gulf airlines also often use larger planes that are not as affected by high heat.

Though they may not set new records, temperatures are going to stay dangerously hot through the weekend.

In Phoenix, Arizona, though, airlines still use small jets for shorter trips.

Wednesday in Phoenix started out breaking a daily heat record and signed off by breaking another.

Caesars Entertainment, which operates the casino, said the birds aren't usually brought in unless temperatures exceed 120 degrees.

At higher temperatures, air has a lower density - it is thinner.

Tucson, for example, experiences its wettest months in July and August, although the monsoon can last through September. "Obviously it's way too hot for a blanket", he says, "but for individuals who are sleeping on the streets, they put it down to prevent themselves from burning, to insulate themselves from the asphalt". Perhaps it's counterintuitive, but in the Eastern United States - where summer humidity can be oppressive - the presence of moisture in the air keeps the temperature down.
