Qatar withdraws troops from Djibouti-Eritrea border mission

Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported the arrival of the vessels on Wednesday, the same day that Qatar signed an agreement for the purchase of F-15 fighter jets from the United States with an initial cost of $12bn.

The agreement is for the purchase of a number of F-15 fighter jets, a sale which the Pentagon says will ensure that Qatar has "state-of-the-art" defensive capabilities.

A US Air Force F-15 fighter jet does a low-level flyby over Forward Operating Base Bostick in eastern Afghanistan January 1, 2009.

Al Attiyah noted that the signing of the agreement is "yet another step in advancing our strategic and cooperative defense relationship with the United States and we look forward to continuing our joint military efforts with our partners here in the US". Saudi Arabia closed Qatar's only land border, through which about 40% of the imported foods consumed entered.

The move by Saudi and its allies came shortly after US President Donald Trump visited Riyadh, with some analysts saying the US leader had emboldened the Saudi leadership.

Qatar has withdrawn its peacekeeping troops from the Djibouti-Eritrea border, the foreign ministry said on Wednesday, after years of mediating in a territorial dispute between the two African states. Trump said the other Gulf nations requested his help in confronting Qatar.

"The nation of Qatar, unfortunately, has historically been a funder of terrorism at a very high level", Trump said earlier this month. In their apparent bid to secure U.S. support and that of Israel, the four countries cited Qatar's links with the Palestinian resistance movement of Hamas and accused it of supporting terrorism.

Erdogan vehemently rejected the accusations - already strongly denied by Doha - that Qatar supports terrorism, arguing the country had been a staunch opponent of Islamic State group.

Qatar also hosts around 10,000 US troops, as well as the forward headquarters of the military's Central Command that's conducting air campaigns in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria. "The blockade is hindering United States military actions in the region and the campaign against ISIS", Tillerson said, without providing details.
