Remembrance Services Mark Year Anniversary Of Pulse Massacre

The president's observance of the one-year anniversary comes as break from what could be viewed as a general indifference to LGBTQ issues, considering he has yet to issue a proclamation recognizing June as Pride month.

Instead of focusing on the chaos and heartache following the morning of June 12, when a gunman opened fire inside the packed Pulse nightclub, taking hostages and 49 lives, a year later the city is celebrating.

Suspected shooter Omar Mateen pledged allegiance to the Islamic State during the attack and was later killed in a shootout with police.

Hundreds of people in Orlando left flowers, cards and drawings at the Pulse nightclub to remember the victims.

A vigil was held in downtown Grand Rapids for the 49 people who were gunned down in a gay nightclub in Orlando past year.

Rider said he plans to continue to honor the victims in the future. Two groups of survivors will oversee the effort, funded by Poma's onePULSE Foundation; eventually she will solicit bids from designers.

The memorial will feature Orlando-based artists as well as singers like Olga Tañón, who will sing her rendition of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah". "And what he did was brought the LGBT community together, but also built bridges with other communities that we didn't have those bridges with before".

"That will be a part of the history books, but the true legacy of our community is going to be [that] in our darkest hour we responded with love and compassion and unity", Ms Jacobs said.

Community members say memorials like this are important not only to remember the lives lost, but also to serve as a reminder.

As part of the governor's proclamation Scott has ordered that US and State of Florida flags be flown at half-staff until Monday at sunset at all state and local buildings, installations and grounds throughout Florida.

"It breaks my heart that your sanctuary was taken from you".

"We've come a long way, but we still have a long way to go", Sutton said.

Monday's services culminated several days of events aimed at turning the grim anniversary into something positive. A foot race was held over the weekend, and eight gay and lesbian students were awarded $ 6,600 toward their college studies by a local businessman.

A steady stream of visitors came by the Orange County Regional History Centre to see an exhibit of memorial items, including 49 crosses with the victims' names and photos attached.

"It's a rainbow tarp on the fence".

Terry Livingston is the executive director of Grand Strand Pride and said Monday was all about continuing last year's theme of "love conquers hate".
