Ricciardo wins Baku thriller as Vettel hits Hamilton

Ricciardo wins Baku thriller as Vettel hits Hamilton”

But Vettel maintained that Hamilton was just as much to blame.

Ferrari star Vettel was handed a 10-second stop-go penalty for "dangerous driving" after he deliberately drove into Hamilton s Mercedes while both were following the safety auto.

"To be honest I didn't think we could [win]", Horner told Sky Sports F1 after the race.

Hamilton got away cleanly, but Raikkonen clipped Bottas and bumped his own Ferrari into the wall, and Vettel surged past them into second place.

Hamilton bolted early as the safety auto peeled in, dropping the surprised Vettel into the clutches of Perez behind.

The Brit was forced to pit by race control to change his headrest which had come loose and was a safety issue.

Hamilton moved within 11 points of title leader Nico Rosberg after their last-lap collision in the 2016 Austrian Grand Prix. Bottas (Mercedes) 3. Stroll (Williams) 4.

The anticipated Mercedes dominance was tested early on when Bottas came off the kerb and collided with Ferrari rival Raikkonen, forcing both Finns into the pits early on.

Vettel recovered from his penalty to finish fourth, crucially one place ahead of Hamilton. Dropping back to 17th at one stage, Ricciardo worked his way up the order during three Safety Car periods and found himself running in the top five.

Esteban Ocon was sixth, but lucky to survive an unfortunate clash with Force India team-mate Sergio Perez that forced the latter out of the race.

The red flag was thrown on lap 22 and was used to clean the track with debris everywhere after collisions at every Safety Car restart.

Further chaos unfolded when Daniil Kvyat stopped, his Toro Rosso having lost all electrical power on lap eight.

Vettel now leads Hamilton by 14 points in the world championship. A Mercedes mechanic, armed with a screwdriver and pliers patched up the bodywork on the rear of his auto, and Hamilton was good to go for the re-start.

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2017 is a street circuit and as expected a lot of accidents took place resulting in the safety auto being deployed numerous times.

After eight races, Vettel leads Hamilton by 14 points in the drivers' championship.

The safety auto was deployed for the third time as debris was cleared, albeit too late for Raikkonen, who sustained damage to his vehicle after running over bodywork at Turn 1, forcing him to head to the garage.

Then, the 29-year-old German, furiously gesticulating with both hands, pulled alongside his rival, before inexplicably ramming into the side of Hamilton's Mercedes.

Ricciardo ultimately went on to claim a surprise victory, the Australian having completed a brilliant move on Williams duo Felipe Massa and Lance Stroll following the red flag.

"It was just a insane race, with all the safety cars and the chaos", Ricciardo said.

The first safety auto came in after 16 laps, racing resuming with Perez making an attack on Vettel who resisted, before another safety vehicle, the second, was deployed due to debris.

A sullen-looking Vettel chatted to Ferrari team principal Maurizio Arrivabene, while Hamilton slipped on his headphones as he listened to music with his sunglasses on. An irate Vettel then accelerated alongside Hamilton, gesticulated and moved his auto to the right and into him.
