Ricciardo wins chaotic Azerbaijan GP; Canadian Stroll makes podium

Ricciardo wins chaotic Azerbaijan GP; Canadian Stroll makes podium”

Both Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel held first and second position for the first half of the race, but after a penalty for Vettel and a malfunction with Hamilton's auto, Ricciardo was able to push past the other racers and claim his fifth Grand Prix victory.

Hamilton was in the lead and behind a safety auto when Vettel made contact with the Mercedes driver from the back before the German accelerated alongside the Brit before appearing to swerve back into him. "Maybe we've seen the limit of that respect today". You think a multi-time world champion would behave better than that. "That is not how you drive".

Ricciardo moved into the lead when Vettel was forced to serve a penalty for risky driving, and went unchallenged en route to victory in Baku from there, finishing 3.9 seconds clear of the pack.

"It couldn't be clearer". You can watch footage of the incident courtesy of Trending Sports here. Bottas offered up an explanation of his own after the race, saying he had to take an aggressive line over the kerb as he was on the inside.

Then, the 29-year-old German, furiously gesticulating with both hands, pulled alongside his rival, before inexplicably ramming into the side of Hamilton's Mercedes.

This wasn't the first time for the British driver to show his rude and unsportsmanlike behavior and this is exactly why he is one of the champions who are the least favorite among the fans.

"Today wasn't fair play".

"He was turning in the corner so that for me there was nowhere else to go other than over the kerb".

"For sure he did not do it on goal".

The safety vehicle came out three times in quick succession before a red flag stopped the race on lap 22 of 51 because debris littered the track. Find out what these 100 members of Congress have to say about it.

Sebastian Vettel noted that he would seek out Lewis Hamilton and talk over the incident with his rival.

The incident happened when the pair were driving slowly behind the safety auto, following a series of unrelated crashes involving other cars.

Vettel was angry after he had originally gone into the back of Hamilton's auto while the British ace was backing up the field ahead of the restart.

"I don't know really, I need to have a bit more [of a] look at the videos and stuff and review it a bit more but for me it was no option to back off".

Racing resumed, for a third time, on lap 19, but only after the incident in which Vettel hit the rear of Hamilton s vehicle, under braking as the leader tried to avoid the slow-moving safety auto. Mercedes is on top of the team standings with 250 points to 226 for Ferrari. He's done something similar a few years ago in China so. "It's just not the way to do it".

"I kind of said yesterday that after my qualifying mistake and starting in tenth place, today was going to be a race of no mistakes, capitalising on moments and opportunities and I felt like we did everything we could this afternoon".

Sebastian Vettel gestures angrily at Lewis Hamilton before the two cars collided.

It was an extraordinary performance from Stroll, the son of a billionaire, who faced heavy criticism earlier in the season.

It was surely disappointing to lose second place for Stroll, but Williams can't be that sad about achieving the team's first podium this season.

In the end, Ricciardo may have been the one to win a chaotic race but Stroll, at 18, undoubtedly won the event.

The race was just about to start again when race control called for the safety vehicle to stay out, because of debris from Raikkonen's auto.

Hamilton was on pole position for the 66th time, with Bottas next, followed by Kimi Raikkonen and Vettel fourth. In most motorsports deliberately hitting another driver would result in something pretty severe like a race ban, but the Ferrari driver was lucky to escape with just a 10-second stop-go penalty.

Up ahead, Hamilton asked over the radio where Bottas was, perhaps concerned his teammate would not be able to protect him from Vettel later in the race.

Both of them carved their way back to the front, but it wasn't enough.

The next round is the Austrian GP on July 9, but it is unlikely to be anywhere near as thrilling as the one in Baku.
