Role of DUP, new partner in UK government

May - who lost her majority June 8 with a failed gamble on a snap election - and DUP leader Arlene Foster presided at the signing of a deal at Downing Street, Reuters reported.

He said: "Today's deal represents a straight bung to keep a weak Prime Minister and a faltering government in office".

Their negotiations have secured an extra £1bn for Northern Ireland over two years - roughly £800 for every voter in the province.

McDowell was part of a group of church leaders who are urging Northern Ireland's politicians to strike a power sharing deal for the common good of everyone.

The agreement was signed by Tory chief whip Gavin Williamson and the DUP's Sir Jeffrey Donaldson while Mrs May and Mrs Foster, along with Damian Green and Nigel Dodds, watched on. The package includes 1 billion pounds ($1.27 billion) of new funding and 500 million pounds ($638 million) of previously announced funds.

Leaders of Scotland and Wales voiced anger at the deal, saying it would weaken, not strengthen, the ties that bind the United Kingdom by "throwing money" at one of its devolved regions at the expense of others.

"As the Prime Minister herself has said, the deal will be public".

'So the agreement we have come to is a very, very good one, and look forward to working with you'.

"SNP MPs will demand Scotland gets it fair share of any funding that is going to Northern Ireland - the Scottish Tory MPs should join us in standing up for Scotland and making sure that we get our fair share".

A scheme created to ease congestion on Belfast's motorways is to get the go-ahead as part of the DUP's deal with the Tories.

Jon Tonge, a professor of history at Liverpool University who has written extensively about the DUP, has said that while the party has become less dogmatic, it certainly can not be described as pluralist.

Despite the breakthrough, May's position remains tenuous.

Her strategy for a complete break of Britain from the European Union is under scrutiny and her future as prime minister is the subject of public debate with speculation that she could be challenged from within her own party within months.

Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams said the deal means a continuation of Conservative Party policies.

The self-styled "Christian fundamentalist" party has softened its fiery anti-Catholicism and other harsh stances over the years - it no longer calls for padlocking children's playgrounds and closing cafes and bars on Sundays.

'In terms of the Northern Ireland Executive, of course we are determined to see it back in place as soon as possible as well, because we believe we need a strong voice for Northern Ireland when dealing not least with the Brexit issue'.

Ireland's former premier Enda Kenny has warned that a deal with the Protestant and pro-British DUP could upset Northern Ireland's fragile peace.

The clash led Sinn Fein to warn of a breakdown in trust, charging the DUP with "arrogance and a lack of respect" for minorities, particularly Irish nationalists.

Mrs Foster said: 'We're delighted that we have reached this agreement, which I think works, obviously, for national stability.
