Ron Johnson: Health Bill Throws More Money at but Doesn't Fix Problem

After Spicer spoke, Republican Senator Dean Heller became the fifth Republican opponent on Friday, saying he would not support the bill in its current form.

Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell wants to hold a vote on the bill before the July 4th recess, most likely next Thursday. The legislation would phase out federal funding for Medicaid expansion - now covering about 11 million people in 31 states - beginning in 2020, and shift more of those costs back to states.

Trump earlier indicated changes may be in store for the proposal unveiled by Senate Republicans on Thursday to replace former President Barack Obama's signature healthcare law. He said the changes he is seeking to the bill would go in the opposite direction of those sought by other current "no" votes - conservative hard-liners including Texas Sen.

"I really feel that people have to recognize a vote to be able to cut back Medicaid, which is what this really is.is a vote to be able to lose your seat whether you're in the Senate or the House".

"I have a hard time believing Wisconsin constituents or myself will have enough time to properly evaluate this for me to vote for a motion to proceed", he said.

President Donald Trump confirmed Sunday that he had characterized the Senate's version of the Obamacare repeal bill as "mean", but gave no indication that will lessen his support of the legislation.

The latest Republican effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act is being shunned by U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow.

The measure calls for reducing money for Medicaid. "We have a few people that are I think, I could say modestly, they're not standing on the rooftops and screaming".

He said the Senate bill "doesn't even begin" to address the rising cost of health care.

Sen. Susan Collins of ME said it would be "very difficult" for President Trump and GOP leaders to get her support this week for the Senate's health care bill.

An outside political group aligned with the White House, America First Policies, said it is planning an advertising campaign targeting Heller for his opposition to the bill.
