Ronaldo to Appear Before Judge in July for Tax Fraud

Ronaldo to Appear Before Judge in July for Tax Fraud”

A judge will then decide if there are grounds to charge him with a crime. A Spanish prosecutor alleges that the Portuguese didn't declare income received from image rights, "in order to get an illicit benefit".

Jose Mourinho became the latest to be accused of defrauding tax authorities by Spanish prosecutors for a sum of £2.9million during his time at Real Madrid.

The law was created to clarify how much the Spanish taxman could claim from employment and images rights. The 54-year-old Mourinho, who coached Madrid from 2010-13, now coaches Manchester United.

However, allegations of tax fraud - denied by the forward - have brought Ronaldo's future into question and United have been heavily linked with a swoop for their former star.

A statement from the Attorney General's Office confirmed to Press Association Sport that the Madrid Prosecutor's Office had lodged the papers, relating to 2011 and 2012, with the municipal court.

Florentino Perez will stay on as Real Madrid president until 2021 after no other candidates presented a bid to rival the incumbent before Sunday's deadline, the European champions announced in a statement on Monday.

Speaking about Ronaldo's reported desire to leave the club, Perez added: "Not I, nor anyone at Madrid, is contemplating that Cristiano could leave the club".

Known to be the world's highest paid sports star, the 32 year old has been charged with four criminal offences against the public treasury.

"Cristiano is a good man and he is being made to look like a criminal.I don't think he is annoyed at us, I think he is annoyed at the general situation".

Prosecutors accuse the Portugal worldwide of evading tax via a shell company based in the British Virgin Islands and another in Ireland, known for its low corporate tax rate.

Portugal coach Santos, who guided the team to Euro 2016 glory previous year, was asked whether Ronaldo's future had become an issue and if he believed he would still be a Real player next season.
