Spieth wins Travelers with 60-foot shot from bunker

Spieth wins Travelers with 60-foot shot from bunker”

Jordan Spieth won the Travelers Championship on Sunday in a playoff, clinching the title in spectacular fashion as he holed out from a green-side bunker to defeat Daniel Berger at the first extra hole. "I played great today".

Spieth, the World No.6 heading into the Travelers Championship, is likely to move back to No.5 after this victory. "I jumped up and saw it coming right down on the pin".

"Yeah, obviously disappointment. But at the same time, I still had a putt to go another hole and nearly made it". But Spieth is a tough enough act to follow. From Jim Furyk's record 58 last year to Kevin Streelman's tour-record seven birdies in seven holes to win in 2014 to the many playoffs - seven in the past 13 years, now - our state's PGA stop has gone from insignificant to a summer highlight in a flash.

It's the second time Spieth has won after leading a PGA Tour event wire-to-wire.

No. 10 came Sunday. But, after Spieth had dropped a shot on the 14th and Berger made a birdie on the 15th, the pair were tied. The others have been Gene Littler in 1959 and Tim Morris in 1982. The victory for Spieth, 23, was the 10th of his career.

Tiger Woods would have made the putt. The crowds were massive, the weather was flawless, and there was electric in the air as Jordan Spieth and Daniel Berger headed into a Sudden Death playoff.

Spieth's birdie pipped out countryman Daniel Berger in the playoff after Berger had posted 12-under, leaving Spieth to par the 72nd hole to force a playoff.

New Zealand s Danny Lee and American Charley Hoffman shared third on 270, one stroke ahead of England s Paul Casey and Americans Patrick Reed and Boo Weekley, who managed his first top-25 finish of the season. Berger was unable to hole out from just off the green and the title went to Spieth.

Whether it is the first tee shot of your round, an approach shot over water, or on a hole at your home club that has seemingly always had your measure, every golfer has golf shots that leave them overcome with fear and doubt.

"Hit the tree, kick it out, 5-iron in", laughed Greller, who kept the rake, saying it would look good in his mancave. Berger's ran off the green to the left.

"That was one for the ages", said Spieth, who also won the AT&T at Pebble Beach earlier this year. The attendance for the week was estimated to be around 290,000, which was a 30 percent increase from past year, according to Tournament Director Nathan Grube. "That's a lot of luck". "If I were a fan, I would pick this tournament. This one and Phoenix is kind of two that stick out to come to on the PGA Tour season, just given the excitement of the closing holes".

He still had a birdie putt left for a chance to continue Sunday's Travelers Championship.

But then he sputtered with bogeys at 4 and 12.
