Such incidents should be stopped at earliest: Brinda Karat on Ballabhgarh lynching”

Indian police Saturday said one person has been arrested after a mob stabbed a Muslim teenager to death on suspicion of carrying beef, an offence in many parts of the Hindu-majority country.

"One accused has already been arrested".

The Hindustan Times quoted the man, the only accused to have been arrested so far, as saying, "I was drunk". Cops took the man along with them and boarded a train from Okhla to Ballabgarh to identify some of the daily passengers and reconstruct the events.

The only politicians to rush to the spot as news of the awful incident was confirmed were CPI (M) s Brinda Karat, Asha Sharma and Mohammad Saleem. The leaders said they were told that young men travelling on this train to and from Delhi with identifiable signs of being Muslims, such as the skull cap or beard are targeted for communal abuse by groups on the train. While Junaid was declared brought dead at a hospital in Palwal, the condition of Shakir and Hashim are said to be critical.

"He is claiming he didn't stab Junaid, and also not telling who all were with him during the crime on Thursday night".

The train was between Ballabhgarh in Haryana and Mathura when the passengers were attacked.

As per reports, what was initially an argument over seats soon turned communal after the mob found out that they were Muslims. He also said that railway policemen ignored his requests for intervention.

"There was blood spattered all over the floor and the passengers just moved away as they dragged Junaid on the floor", he said.

"We can not disclose the name of the accused right now". They apparently tried calling the police but were unable to get through. The Muslim family was returning home after Eid shopping from Delhi and had boarded the train from Tughlaqabad. "We were surrounded by men who kept yelling that we should be beaten up for resisting them". The family has identified two attackers among the people detained.

"We have initiated an inquiry into the allegations and will take strict action if anyone is found to have been negligent".

The delegation, which asked the police to ascertain the political affiliation of those involved in the "horrific mob lynching", said the accused would not dare target the victims sans "political patronage" in the BJP-ruled state.
