The Russia investigation is now inside the Oval Office

The Russia investigation is now inside the Oval Office”

Trump followed up about an hour later with another critical tweet: "You are witnessing the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people!"

Significantly, Preet Bharara, the India-born former top United States federal prosecutor, earlier this week had said that there was enough evidence to begin an obstruction of justice case against Trump over his alleged interference in the Russian Federation probe.

Mueller was appointed by Rosenstein on 17 May to lead the Russian Federation investigation as a special counsel, a position created to conduct investigations when a normal Justice Department probe would present a conflict of interest.

Mueller, himself a widely respected former head of the FBI, has now taken up the angle of possible efforts by Trump to obstruct justice in the investigation, the Post said.

The obstruction of justice investigation into Trump began days after former FBI director James Comey was sacked on May 9, the paper cited sources as saying, Reuters reports.

Former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey told Congress last week he believes he was sacked by Mr Trump to undermine the agency's Russian Federation probe.

Comey's firing is a "central moment that's being looked at" in the investigation, Post reporter Devlin Barrett told NPR's Ari Shapiro, "but it's not the only thing".

Investigators have also been looking for any evidence of possible financial crimes by Trump associates, the daily said, quoting unnamed U.S. officials.

The White House has denied any collusion, and Trump has repeatedly complained about the probe, saying Democrats can not accept his election win. It cited five people briefed on the requests by Mueller's team who spoke on condition of anonymity. Rosenstein in a memo to Trump raised concerns over FBI Director James Comey. "Nice", the President said.

Republican Senator John Thune defended Mueller's integrity and said he needs to be able to continue to do his job and get to the bottom of the issues.

The administration initially gave differing reasons for his dismissal, including that he had lost the confidence of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Second, it suggests that not only is the special counsel's investigation reaching upward in the White House but that is also broadening out from simply an attempt to answer the question of the breadth of Russia's hacking and whether it caught up any Trump officials in it.

Mr Trump denied telling Mr Comey to drop the Flynn investigation or asking for the FBI chief's "loyalty" and said he was "100 per cent" willing to testify under oath to that.

It is possible, however, that the sources for the Post report could have been those interviewed as part of the investigation, not the investigators themselves.

Meanwhile, US Vice President Mike Pence has hired a personal lawyer to deal with requests from the special counsel investigating possible collusion with Russian Federation during the 2016 election, a top aide told AFP on Thursday.

The newspaper's story was met with a furious reaction from Trump's personal lawyer and the Republican National Committee.

Friday's tweets are the latest in a week of angry social media responses by the president over a report by The Washington Post that Mueller was looking into whether Trump obstructed justice.

"The vice president has retained Richard Cullen of McGuire Woods to assist him in responding to inquiries by the special counsel", Pence communications director Jared Agen said in a statement.
