Trump's approval at 40%, only 16% support House's health care bill

(AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin). People are removed from a sit-in outside of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's office as they protest proposed cuts to Medicaid, Thursday, June 22, 2017 on Capitol Hill in Washington. The nuts and bolts of legislation and the maddening, unpredictable ways and rhythms of Congress can seem foreign to him.

McConnell has said he's willing to make changes to win support, and in the week ahead, plenty of back-room bargaining is expected as he tries pushing a final package through the Senate.

Trump bemoaned the lack of bipartisanship in Washington, having belittled prominent Democrats himself.

Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., one of the five senators opposing the bill, said he also wants to review the CBO score.

Heller got an opponent for next year when first-year Democratic Rep. Jacky Rosen announced this week she would seek his Senate seat.

On taxes, a working group of four top lawmakers is meeting weekly in hopes of coming up with a unified GOP tax plan for a vote this fall.

Paul said Friday "I want the bill to look more like a repeal bill". He took to Twitter to boast of passing 38 bills thus far.

"It's going to be very hard to get me to a yes", he said, noting that conservative Republican senators would likely be reluctant to add spending back to the measure.

Pennsylvania Senator Pat Toomey appeared on Sunday's Face the Nation backing up the Senate Republican health care bill. Considerably more generous than the house. Here's how you're going to use your health care. CEO Jeff Thomas said people who are able to have regular appointments with counselors and psychiatrists now will wait until they're in crisis to seek care and are likely to end up in overburdened jails, state mental hospitals or private hospitals for problems that could have been avoided with early care.

The bill is supported by Trump.

But Trump didn't articulate what improvements he wanted to see in the Senate bill, even as the comment ruffled feathers in the House. How would it work under this Senate bill?

Trump said he thinks Republicans in the Senate are doing the best they can to push through the bill.

ROVNER: Well, the piece of the Affordable Care Act that's most at stake is what we've just been talking about, the people who buy their own insurance in the individual market.

Others, like Sens. Dean Heller of Nevada, Shelly Moore Capito of West Virginia and Rob Portman of OH, have pointed to concerns about the proposal's cuts to Medicaid. The others, including Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Rob Portman of OH, will have plenty of time to explain either yes or no votes.

President Donald Trump's job approval rating stands at 40%, according to an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll released Friday. But federal funding for the program would be capped, based either on a fixed amount per enrollee in states or as a lump-sum block grant paid directly to states, according to published reports.

Behind the scenes, several members of Trump's team have been active in discussions with Senate leaders, including chief of staff Reince Priebus; legislative director Marc Short; domestic policy chief Andrew Bremberg, who's a former aide to McConnell; Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price; and Seema Verma, who oversees Medicare and Medicaid.

She was responding to an article citing Harvard research which found that the Senate bill, the Better Care Reconciliation Act, "could result" in between 18,000 and 28,000 deaths in 2026.
