USA tech titans urge Trump to tackle skills gap

USA tech titans urge Trump to tackle skills gap”

Behind the scenes at the White House tech CEO meeting, Apple CEO Tim Cook told President Donald Trump that technology employees are "nervous" about the administration's approach to immigration, according to a source familiar with the exchange.

The meeting Monday of the American Technology Council, which Trump commissioned in May and which is being shepherded by Kushner, kicks off a week of administration events themed on technology.

But none of the executives criticized the president in public sessions, and Trump projected a jovial mood, touting the gains in technology stocks since he took office and expressing confidence his administration would overcome such long-running challenges as modernizing the air traffic system.

Its objective is to help modernize the federal government's technology.

Trump's senior adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner welcomed the executives to the White House saying: "We will unleash the creativity of the private sector to provide citizen services in a way that has never happened before". No comment from Apple or White House so far.

"The US should have the most modern government in the world".

Kushner highlighted some astonishing examples of outdated federal IT infrastructure, including the fact that the defense department still uses 8in floppy disks on some of its legacy systems.

More news: The Senate health bill is a travesty on a fast track

Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who once served as an economic advisor to the president, has already announced that he would step down following Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement on climate change. He stepped down from a number of White House advisory councils after a different controversial Trump decision - withdrawing the US from the Paris climate agreement.

"Americans deserve better digital services from their government, " Trump wrote in the order.

This is something Cook has publicly discussed before.

While it is unclear what the president meant, Haberman pointed out that this is the second time Trump has left someone feeling like he will pursue a policy similar to one pushed by Jeb Bush, a former GOP presidential rival.

The American Technology Council, established by an executive order in May, signed by Trump, attracted 18 technology executives.

Some of the tech companies in attendance were major critics of the president's travel ban limiting visitors from some Muslim-majority countries. We're going to change that with the help of great American businesses like the people assembled.
