Wettlaufer sentenced to life in prison with no parole for 25 years

Wettlaufer sentenced to life in prison with no parole for 25 years”

A Canadian nurse who used insulin to kill eight elderly patients in long-term care facilities has been sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp (CBC) reported on Monday.

All of Elizabeth Wettlaufer's sentences will be served concurrently, not added together. "Sorry is much too small a word", Wettlaufer told the court.

Wettlaufer pleaded guilty to eight counts of first-degree murder, four counts of attempted murder and two counts of aggravated assault.

Susan Horvath, whose father was killed in 2014, spoke to reporters just before the sentencing.

A total of 28 victim impact statements were expected to be filed with the court on Monday.

Family and friends of the 14 victims will be in attendance and read statements of how the crimes have impacted them.

Wettlaufer, 49, is being sentenced today in a Woodstock court.

Speaking through tears, Arpad Horwath Jr. told the court that his father's death is "a nightmare that I can not wake up from".

"So what bothers me the most is that I was not able to care for him and protect him", explained his son David Silcox in an email from his home in France.

"It terrifies me that I can't trust an institution", she said amid tears.

"More typically, I think is there's neglect and negligence and they're not being noticed by the system for exactly the same reasons as those that didn't get noticed in Wettlaufer's case", Meadus said.

Sandy Millard, whose 87-year-old mother died in October 2011, said she often hasn't wanted to leave the house or reach out to family since learning of the nurse's crimes.

"Finding out (my mother) was killed by a huge injection of medication she did not need broke my heart", Millard said. She said she believes she is depressed, and she is trying to "fight my way back to sanity".

"She'll never see the light of day", he said outside the courthouse. "I feel helpless and defeated".

Elizabeth Wettlaufer says she hopes the families of her victims can find peace and healing.
