Wimbledon most open for a decade, says contender Lopez

Wimbledon most open for a decade, says contender Lopez”

The tiebreaker proved captivating, and Lopez claimed the trophy with a 10-8 victory.

Making the victory sweeter for Lopez was the realization that he really did prevail at The Queen's Club.

It was also Lopez's third title on grass after winning Eastbourne in 2013 and 2014. "To win this tournament at this stage of my career, this is so incredible".

"Wow. I can't believe I finally won this trophy". Outside of the Grand Slams, this is one of the most special tournaments.

Lopez posted solid upsets along the way by defeating seventh-seeded Tomas Berdych and sixth-seeded Grigor Dimitrov before fighting off another high seed in Cilic in the final. He was in the same position at The Queen's Club that year in the final against Dimitrov and lost the point and eventually lost the match. "It was tough to put that (match point in 2014) out of my mind so it was hard to handle my nerves but I managed it".

Lopez performed miracles to scramble a point at 7-7 and serve for the match but Cilic responded with a nerveless volley after an exchange of blows from the baseline. "It was tough to handle my nerves".

World number one Andy Murray was knocked out in the first round of the ATP 500 grass-court event, while the likes of Milos Raonic and Stan Wawrinka also made early exits.

It still looked that way as the second set neared its conclusion, but Lopez played a near ideal tiebreaker to force a decider.

Lopez saved his match point with a powerful volley at 5-6 in the breaker before Cilic fended off two, but at the third time of asking, the fourth seed pulled a forehand into the tramlines to hand his opponent the long-awaited tournament win.

The 26-year-old, now ranked 387th in the world, was given a wildcard into this year's qualifying draw but will face a tough task to win the three matches required to reach the first round. "I was waiting so long so I'm so happy today".

'Definitely I'm going to get into Wimbledon with good determination, good confidence.

Yet Cilic couldn't press home his advantage in the second set. He won the title in 2012. I'm looking forward to the tournament.

"I lost my serve only once during whole week, which is unbelievable". That makes it even better.

"Roger is playing great. I was mixing it up really well and just playing really smart in some critical points". "Then I can continue with good form".

Lopez is the oldest Queen's champion in the Open era.

On the same day, Federer comprehensively beat Alexander Zverev in the final in Halle, and has been tipped by many, including Lopez, to lift an eighth Wimbledon crown.
