Canada to compensate ex-Guantanamo inmate, apologize”

Khadr's lawyers met the Department of Justice attorneys behind closed doors last month to reach the deal, the report said. He pleaded guilty to killing a USA army medic and became the youngest inmate held at the US military prison in Cuba.

Omar Khadr, a Canadian held for 10 years in the prison of Guantanamo before being transferred to Canada and released on conditions in 2015, will get at least $ 10 million compensation from the federal government for the ill-treatment suffered during his captivity, indicate on Tuesday the daily Globe and Mail and the Toronto Star, citing anonymous sources.

Khadr was taken to Afghanistan by his father, a senior al Qaeda member, who apprenticed the boy to a group of bomb makers who opened fire when USA troops went to their compound.

In 2010, he pled guilty to multiple charges, including murder, and received an eight year sentence.

"For 15 years Omar Khadr's case has been a stark reminder of the many ways that an over-reaching and unchecked approach to national security readily runs roughshod over universally protected human rights", Alex Neve, secretary general of Amnesty International Canada, said in a statement.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in Ireland for a visit, said the judicial process should be ending soon but declined further comment.

Khadr, who claimed the Americans tortured him after his capture and at Guantanamo Bay, was long dubbed a child soldier in need of protection by his supporters.

Earlier, Khadr accepted a plea deal in Guantanamo in 2010 in return for being able to come back to Canada.

Khadr was returned to Canada in 2012, after spending a decade in a detention facility in Guantanamo, and continued to be incarcerated until 2015, when he was granted bail by a Canadian court.

Mr Khadr was released in May 2015, having appealed against a conviction based on a confession which, he said, was made under duress.

"There is a judicial process underway that has been underway for a number of years now, and we are anticipating like I think a number of people are, that that judicial process is coming to its conclusion", he said.

His lawyers demanded $ 20 million (13.6 million euros) to the canadian government, arguing that his rights as a prisoner had been violated. Khadr's Egyptian-born father was killed in 2003 when a Pakistani military helicopter shelled the house where he was staying with senior al-Qaida operatives.

The widow of Speer and another American soldier blinded by the grenade in Afghanistan filed a wrongful death and injury lawsuit against Khadr in 2014 fearing Khadr might get his hands on money from his $20 million wrongful imprisonment lawsuit.

The former prisoner apologized to the families of the victims, stating his total rejection of violence. He also said he rejected violent jihad and wanted a fresh start to finish his education. He now resides in an apartment in Edmonton, Alberta.
