Evil Genius is finally getting a sequel”

The cult-PC classic came out in 2006, and in a video interview released today, Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley announced that Evil Genius 2 is now in the works. Instead, it will be a fully-fledged sequel and it won't be free-to-play.

The original Evil Genius' core concept was utterly glorious, casting you as an worldwide super villain, hellbent on causing as much global chaos as possible. Elixir sadly closed its doors in 2005, but Rebellion purchased its intellectual property shortly after, in 2006.

They're now looking at a PC release, but haven't ruled out the possibility of the game coming to other platforms, such as PS4, Xbox One, Switch, smart devices, Atari ST, or BBC Micro.

So yes, it's taken us some time to get to this point. We are going to make this happen.

However, the developer did warn that Evil Genius 2 is "still at a very, very early stage".

In today's press release, the company said the delay from 2013 was partly because of the other big projects it had in the pipeline at that time: Sniper Elite 3 and 4, Zombie Army Trilogy, and Battlezone. The original game was a '60s spy thriller spin on Dungeon Keeper style of game, as you build up your villain's hideout, repel the good guys in combat and try to achieve global domination.

While the game might be forgotten to most the original was a cult classic, and both fans and Rebellion have been muttering about a sequel for years. The crowdfunding idea has since been dropped in favor of a traditional payment and development route, thanks to "the growing success of the Sniper Elite series and other Rebellion games IP".

The announcement, incidentally, comes courtesy of Rebellion's latest video update, cavorting freely over on the studio's official YouTube page, and also above.
