Ava DuVernay's Central Park Five series is headed to Netflix

Ava DuVernay's Central Park Five series is headed to Netflix”

This is the second project DuVernay will create for Netflix, after her widely successful documentary about the prison industrial complex, "13th", aired in 2016.

The series will chronicle the story of the five young black and Latino men wrongly convicted of brutally raping a woman jogging in the New York City park in 1989.

DuVernay will produce, write, and direct a new limited series for Netflix about the infamous 1989 Central Park jogger case, which is commonly referred to as the "Central Park Five" for the five minority male suspects who were falsely accused, charged and convicted of the rape and assault of Trisha Meili. The case made national headlines not only for its brutality, but for the fact that all five recanted the confessions they'd given after almost 24 hours of interrogation, and that no DNA ever tied them to the crime.

"I had an extraordinary experience working with Netflix on 13th and am overjoyed to continue this exploration of the criminal justice system as a narrative project", DuVernay said.

DuVernay previously worked with Netflix on the documentary 13th, which explored race and justice in America following the prohibition of slavery as deemed by the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution.

Each episode of DuVernay's new series will focus on one of the five teenagers, and the story will span from 1989 to 2014.

While this new project will be a scripted series, it will return to numerous same themes as "13th", which examined race and the U.S. criminal justice system.

President Donald Trump famously put out full-page ads in four NY papers two weeks after the teens were arrested in April 1989, calling for the teens to be executed.

The now unnamed series is set to land on Netflix in 2019.
