Home Depot employee says he was sacked for helping child”

A Portland, Ore. man said Home Depot fired him for attempting to stop a kidnapping, a decision the hardware store later reversed.

After hearing the woman scream for help and claim, "he's stealing my kid", the employee notified his coworker inside and they promptly called the police.
After giving their statements to police, Reagan said they returned to the store about 10 minutes later.

Reagan, who had worked at the store four years, was finishing a shift in the tool-rental department May 12 when a co-worker yelled to him as an altercation in the parking lot was happening.

KATU reached out to Home Depot for comment on the firing, and a couple hours later, the company chose to give Reagan his job back, according to the network. He saw the man walking away with the child in his arms, so he and his co-worker started to follow him. Police would later conclude that what Reagan witnessed was not a kidnapping but a domestic dispute, and that no crime was committed. When he filed for unemployment, the Oregon Employment Department approved the application, finding that the man was sacked because "he assisted the police in preventing a kidnapping".

When KOIN contacted Home Depot's corporate office, the company said they offered Reagan his job back.

Vindicated After being let go for violating Home Depot's safety policy Reagan successfully applied for unemployment benefits from the Oregon Employment Department which sided with him in this letter from June 29

"We took a second look at this and chose to reverse our decision, based on the circumstances", a spokesperson for Home Depot told Business Insider.

But for the sacked Good Samaritan, Home Depot's about-face was too little, too late.

Reagan was sacked June 19.

When asked if he would work for the company again, Reagan said no and he hopes his next employer would respond better during an emergency. "We always want to be certain that we're treating any associate fairly", Home Depot said.

"We should be doing the right thing regardless of what company policy is, regardless of what the effect is", Reagan said.
