Thomas Issac Hints at Increase of Food Price in Hotels”

"It would be hard to make chicken available at Rs 87 per kilo from next week, as Kerala FM demands", says Kavi Kumar, an officer-bearer of Kerala Poultry Farmer and Traders Committee.

Speaking to the media here, Issac said till June 30 Kerala was the only state in the country that levied a tax on chicken - under the 14.5 per cent tax bracket.

Traders were selling chicken for ₹180 per kilo till Saturday and stated that it is not possible to sell products stocked before GST at such low price and they need time to sell out current stock at Value-Added Tax regime price.

The traders claim that the direction from the minister to sell chicken Rs 87 a kg is not viable.

Shops and business establishments across Kerala will remain closed on July 11 in view of a strike call given by Kerala Vyapari Vyavasai Ekopana Samithi (KVVES), the largest traders body in the state against new tax regime Goods and Services Tax (GST).

However, the traders said the stock has plummeted. The minister added that illegal trading of chicken and sale will be looked into separately. They also sought the reintroduction of commercial-taxes checkposts and ending the practice of allowing police and transport officials to inspect vehicles alleging corruption.

The government has already established a mechanism to file complaints on increase of prices of commodities, he said in a press release. KVVES state president T Nazuruddin said: "We want time to learn GST process".

It was decided during the meeting between representatives of hotel and restaurants association and merchants' associations. Traders attributed the recent price hike to shortage of chicken in Tamil Nadu, a main sourcing point.

Price rates in AC hotels will be reduced by 8 per cent as per the consensus between the government and the hotel and restaurants association.
