Google wins challenge against 1.1 billion euro French tax bill

Google wins challenge against 1.1 billion euro French tax bill”

USA internet giant Google on Wednesday won a court challenge against demands by French authorities that it pay 1.1 billion euros ($1.3 billion) in back taxes.

In a decision issued Wednesday afternoon, Paris's administrative tribunal ruled that Google's lucrative advertising-sales business had no taxable presence in France - absolving it of income or sales taxes on advertising income from French clients.

In 2015 the company paid just 6.7m euros in corporate taxes in France.

The ruling covers the period between 2005 and 2010.

European action has become increasingly aggressive against USA technology giants Amazon, Facebook and Apple as well as Google.

Newly elected French President Emmanuel Macron promised to get tough on U.S. internet giants during his campaign, seeing their low tax rates as a source of resentment about globalisation and unfair on European companies.

Italian and British authorities have struck deals with Google to reclaim some of the tax they believe the search giant owed. But the figures agreed were much smaller, amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars rather than the $1.3bn claimed by France.
