David Ayer Parts Ways With 'Scarface' Movie

David Ayer Parts Ways With 'Scarface' Movie”

The studio aimed to try again by signing Suicide Squad director David Ayer this past spring, setting him to pen a new script for the remake which switches the Miami setting to Los Angeles.

Director David Ayer is departing Universal's upcoming Scarface reboot. Going overboard with Scarface seems nearly impossible, since the 1983 flick starring Al Pacino (which is actually a remake of the 1932 pic of the same name) has been dubbed "the holy grail of contemporary gangster movies" and features many a bloody murder scene. The current reboot has had a tough development process, as Ayer is not the first director to depart the project. Ayer's take on the script was reportedly "too dark" for Universal's taste (although Variety cites "scheduling issues" as the reason for his exit), which is interesting considering this is the story of a violent, misogynistic drug dealer. A source with knowledge of the situation said the split resulted from scheduling conflicts. Diego Luna (Rogue One, Blood Father) is still attached to play the title gangster.

Ayer has plenty on his plate aside from Scarface.

The search for a new director is underway, and for now, Scarface is still slated to hit theaters August 10, 2018. Bright will be distributed exclusively by Netflix in December.

The studio has struggled to lock a director in for the gig for some time. Not much is known about that project, other than it will showcase some of DC's female characters, and will prominently feature Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, who was the breakout star of Suicide Squad.

Who would you like to see step in and direct the new Scarface movie?
