London tube riders are 'ladies and gentlemen' no more”

London Underground staff has been mandated to stop using "ladies and gentlemen" when greeting people and instead use gender-neutral phrases.

The London Underground is a public rapid transit system serving London and some parts of the adjacent counties.

The salutation, which prefaces numerous automated and live announcements that inform and guide passengers on the London Underground is to be scrapped in favour of "hello everyone", or time specific phrases such as "good morning everyone".

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said last month: 'TfL has made a commitment to transition from gender-specific phrases like "ladies and gentlemen" which are now used in announcements, to a gender-neutral alternative such as "good morning/good afternoon everyone"'. All pre-recorded announcements will also be updated to feature gender-inclusive language.

The change was made after months of campaigning by LGBT groups for a change in the "outdated" language used by...

Transport for London's boss of Customer Strategy, Mark Evers, said he wants 'everyone to feel welcome on our transport network'.

"Language is extremely important to the lesbian, gay, bi and trans community, and the way we use it can help ensure all people feel included", a spokesman for LGBTQ charity Stonewall said.

The shift to gender-inclusive greeting comes after LGBTQ activists in the city called for London mayor Sadiq Khan to change the greeting, especially in relation to the city's recent Pride celebrations.

'We welcome gender neutral announcements to be rolled out across TfL, as it will ensure that everyone - no matter who they identify as - feels accounted for'. "People are saying it's such a small thing and 'get a life.' It's these little things which can make people's lives better", she said.

She added, "London is a city I love travelling through, it's diverse".

At the time, the Khan said he's "aware that some customers may not relate to or feel comfortable with the way that certain station announcements are made". If this happens frequently, TfL will issue reminders to staff'.
