NASA Doesn't Have the Money to Land Humans on Mars

NASA Doesn't Have the Money to Land Humans on Mars”

But unfortunately, according to William H. Gerstenmaier, NASA's chief of human spaceflight, sending people to Mars isn't achievable on their current budget. In other words, we might be able to get to Mars orbit, but developing entry, descent and landing technology is beyond NASA's current budget constraints.

NASA said it lacks the funding to conduct manned missions to Mars, reported Ars Technica.

NASA's new space toys, including the Space Launch System and spacecraft Orion, are expensive endeavors meant to get us close to Mars.

Gerstenmaier says it'll be more than just a gateway for further space exploration but could "support an extensive moon surface program".

In his address, Gerstenmaier explained that going by NASA's budget allocated to it by the U.S. government, it is simply unfeasible to launch a crew to the Red Planet.

Agencies like NASA are really at the mercy of political moods and budgetary restraints, so they need to do as much as they can with what resources are there.

At the time Lightfoot said he found that USA president Donald Trump was supportive of its goal to get humans to Mars, despite the $500m budget cut.

It is timely however that given recent developments, it would appear that private space companies are likely to play a key role - if not shape - the future of space exploration.

Manned Mars Mission Mandate Mangled?

Both Boeing and Blue Origin are also planning to put humans on Mars. It may turn out that the "we" in Vice President Pence's remarks about putting American boots on Mars is the larger American "we", and not the government or NASA.
