Cueto leaves with blisters as Giants beat Padres 5-4

Cueto leaves with blisters as Giants beat Padres 5-4”

There are plenty of reasons to think the baseball is juiced in MLB this season.

But then, a bottom-of-the-order rally provided the Giants with a spark, catcher Buster Posey slugged a home run, and San Francisco came storming back in a come-from-behind 5-4 win over the Padres.

The win might have been costly as Cueto exited the game with two fingers and a thumb on his pitching hand showing signs of blisters. Cueto had to leave Friday's start with blisters to his pitching hand, and when asked after the game, he said the ball could easily be to blame.

"Of course I feel different now", he said through a translator. "This is the first time I've had blisters in my career".

The former Braves left-hander said that if anyone could notice a juiced ball it would be a pitcher.

After staking out an early 2-0 lead, Cueto labored through his shortest outing of the season, a four-inning stint that lasted just 82 pitches and left lingering questions regarding Cueto's health and command. "I really don't know what's happening", he said. Clayton Richard took the loss, falling to 5-9 this season after giving up four runs on 11 hits while walking a pair and striking out four over 5.2 innings of work.

"You could tell he wasn't quite right", Bochy said. He struck out five and walked three.

Posey homered an estimated 429 feet to straightaway center field with one out in the seventh, his 11th overall and first since June 22. Gorkys Hernandez went a ideal 4 for 4 with a double while Brandon Belt, Eduardo Nunez and Brandon Crawford each added a double of their own respectively while Joe Panik chipped in a pair of base hits for the Giants in the win.

The Giants' bullpen responded as Cory Gearrin, George Kontos, Steven Okert, and Hunter Strickland combined to throw four innings of relief before Bochy called on closer Sam Dyson.

RBI singles by Posey in the first and Cueto in the second gave San Francisco a 2-0 lead. Richard, who hasn't won in five starts in a row, struck out four.

Said manager Andy Green: "I thought he settled relatively nicely there, until the sixth inning". "The sixth inning kind of got away from him".

San Diego tied it in the second on Blash's RBI double followed by Erick Aybar's run-scoring base hit. San Diego closed the first half by going 23-20 despite inconsistent play from star first baseman Wil Myers, who is batting.255 after reaching his first All-Star game last season. "It's really hard when you have the lead going and you're expected to come away on top and I wasn't able to do that". To replace them, OF Blash and RHP Jose Valdez were recalled from Triple-A El Paso.

NOTES: Giants INF Eduardo Nunez (hamstring) was activated off the disabled list and started at third base.
