260bhp Vauxhall Insignia GSI announced”

It will debut at September's Frankfurt Motor Show. But Vauxhall's new Insignia GSi proves that there's life in the moniker yet. Having undertaken parts of its development on the iconic Nürburgring circuit, the GSi is 160kg lighter than the comparable Insignia, which, when combined with the low centre of gravity, creates more traction and leads to faster times on the race track.

The auto is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that outputs 295lb ft and is mated to a new eight-speed automatic gearbox with paddle shifters.

As well as more powerful Brembo brakes, the Insignia GSI has sports suspension, which lowers the vehicle by 10mm, and specially designed shock absorbers. It is therefore no surprise that Vauxhall insists that the GSI is a genuinely fun auto that can be used on track, too.

Vauxhall has also provided the new GSI with various visual upgrades aimed at making the vehicle look sportier and more aggressive. The technology continually adapts damping rates and also enables adjustments to the car's steering, and throttle and gearbox responses. Double tapping the button switches it off completely.

Tyres are super-sticky Michelin Pilot Sport 4S and can be had on either 18 or optional 20-inch wheels. That is supported by all-wheel drive with torque vectoring, which replaces the conventional differential on the rear axle with two clutches to accelerate each rear wheel individually as required by the driving situation. It also features bespoke leather upholstered sports seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and metal pedals. This ultimately prevents understeer.

However, Vauxhall has yet to reveal performance figures; only the headline 260bhp power output, average fuel economy of 32.8mpg and 197g/km Carbon dioxide emissions have been announced.

The Insignia's visual revival into the current model is impressive, and could well be a great platform for the new GSi model.

It's great to see the GSI name back on a brand new auto. The rear also features two chrome-edged exhaust pipes, and chrome air intakes can be found near the front wheels to assist the vehicle's performance further.
